The Learning Accessibility Specialist will oversee and implement a limited duration grant focused Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into our guest programming, creating dynamic and accessible engagements for all.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build the skills and capacity of our staff to more fully integrate Universal Design for Learning principles into our virtual and on-grounds programming to ensure we are providing engaging learning experiences to guests with a wide range of abilities.
  • Develop and create a UDL Programming Guidelines Manual.
  • Oversee program development that intentionally includes people with disabilities; making conservation more accessible and relatable to all guests.
  • Design a powerful and relevant training for staff and volunteers who present guest programming, working closely with a UDL Consultant and local inclusion experts.
  • Facilitate a cross-departmental staff advisory group of UDL coaches to collaborate on learning and solving the challenges they encounter.
  • Work with the Events and Communications teams to design “Zoo for All” events to bring in diverse audiences by removing barriers and providing support to encourage increased attendance by underserved populations.
  • Develop a communication access plan in collaboration with the Distance Learning Specialist and
  • Communications team to incorporate accessible formats into online engagements.
  • Establish an evaluation plan to assess effectiveness of modified experiences in programming and events to measure the zoo’s progress at achieving the staff and volunteer outcomes. Collect, manage and report program statistics.
  • Research and write articles, blog posts, flyers, publications, grant report/narrative information, communications/interpretive materials, and other promotional and supporting materials.
  • Work with department management team and the development department to support grant writing, grant reports, donor cultivation tours, events, and other fundraising initiatives.
  • Participate in and facilitation meetings, trainings, and professional development to discuss, plan, and develop departmental strategy, marketing plans, and professional growth plans around UDL, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities in order to stay informed of new trends and research in UDL, accessibility, and inclusion; learn from and share knowledge with colleagues while building relevant partnerships.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year (4) college or university and two (2) or more years’ related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four (4) or more years’ leading and coordinating teams and projects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, concepts, methods, and techniques of universal design.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook; as well as Learning Management Systems (LMS), web development, integrated software systems and applications, and videoconference interfaces.
  • Experience developing and facilitating engaging, inclusive experiences for a variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge of computer and assistive technologies; disability practices and procedures.
  • Ability to participate in, lead and motivate teams, bring in and support different perspectives, and to work with diverse populations and a variety of stakeholders (staff, partners, teachers, librarians, volunteers, visitors, etc.).
  • Excellent internal and external customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated project management skills that include: attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to creatively manage projects with many moving parts.
  • Experience communicating science in both formal and informal settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in educational media communications and/or instructional design.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and schedules in a fast-paced environment with multiple agendas.
  • Open to experimentation, learning, and adjustments along the way; ability to push through ambiguity to deliver results.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting, as well as represent the department in cross-departmental meeting to reach cross-functional goals and the zoo’s mission.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include some evenings and/or weekends.
  • Commitment to the zoo’s mission and core values.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Valid WA driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform essential functions.
  • This position may be required to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.
  • Regular exposure to a typical office environment and occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • May travel to offsite areas to conduct programs.
  • During COVID-19, there may be a combination of remote work and onsite work.

Pay: $55-60k per year, plus benefits. This is a limited duration, grant funded position through the end of August 2022.
