Description

The Welding Engineer develops techniques and procedures and applies production equipment and technical knowledge to problems involving the fabrication of metals. Welding Engineers apply their in-depth knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals, testing equipment and engineering principles to create efficiencies for the shop, while ensuring our products meet customer specifications.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Promote and adhere to the Core Values and Behavior Code.
  • Conducts research and development investigations to develop and test new fabrication processes.
  • Manages the welder qualification process.
  • Improves existing or develop new welding equipment.
  • Develops new or modify current welding methods, techniques or procedures.
  • Prepares technical reports as a result of research and development and preventive maintenance investigations.
  • Establishes welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre and post heating requirements involving the use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods, and welding of critical joints.
  • Supports the planning process for the construction of weldments with weld join design, process and equipment selection, distortion control and inspection requirements.
  • Coordinates inspection of dimensional and NDT requirements.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvements in quality, cost and / or efficiency.
  • Monitors and measures manufacturing processes to identify ways to reduce loss, decrease time requirements, and / or improve quality.
  • Maintains a regular presence on the shop floor.
  • Ensures adherence to safety rules and practices.
 
Position Requirements

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelors’ Degree Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology with training in Metallurgy, or a Bachelors’ Degree in Materials Engineering with training in metallurgy, welding and welding technology.
  • 5+ years’ experience with fabrication of Steel and Stainless Steel
  • Shop experience as a Fitter, Welder and/or Inspector.
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of, AWS, ASME and ASTM codes, MIL and ANSI standards.
  • Familiarity with Non-destructive testing: VT, MT, PT, UT.
  • Engineering and Technology - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Mathematics - Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Production and Processing - Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Weld symbol and fabrication drawing reading
  • Familiar with metal finishing processes (blasting, painting, etc.).
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills for both internal and external customers.
  • Strong organization and attention to detail.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to shift priorities based on the organizations’ needs.
  • Self-motivated and able to exercise independent judgment and make sound decisions, take ownership/accountability and operate with minimal supervision.
  • Integrity and professionalism are essential.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

This full-time position operates in a production environment. Physical effort consists of frequent handling of light to average weight tools or materials, some handling of heavy weights, some pulling, pushing. The employee must be able to lift and move items up to 30 pounds. Work performed requires constant alertness and activity, good eye/hand coordination and concentrated mental and visual attention.
