JOB SUMMARY:

The Youth Counselor position provides direct service to participants with a focus on inspiring youth to make positive decisions for themselves and their futures. Youth Counselors typically focus on one of several programs (Beacons, Strong Fast Fit, Contact Plus, OST, Eureka!, RAP and Learning Pods).

This full-time temporary position provides direct service to middle school-aged participants in YWCA Learning Pods. In partnership with the City of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Center Community School, Learning Pods are designed to support student success with distance learning. Youth Counselors will lead two groups of students: A Monday/Tuesday cohort and a Thursday/Friday cohort at the Earle Browne Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center.

The program will follow Minnesota Department of Health COVID-19 prevention guidance for youth programs to provide a physically safe environment.

Hours:

October 12th – December 23rd

Potential for position to continue into 2021, depending on partnership need and ability

Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday 8:15am-4:00pm

Potential for Wednesday hours depending on program need

Hours subject to change slightly based on need
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Implement comprehensive programming:

  • Plan, prepare and facilitate age appropriate and culturally sensitive educational activities utilizing Girls Inc. and Girls & Youth curriculum
  • Have knowledge, or willingness to gain knowledge, with the technology and educational platforms utilized to confidently troubleshoot technology issues
  • Create and maintain a safe learning environment that is student-centered, mission-focused, and accessible to a diverse student body
  • Support communication with participants and families, and organize and support retention efforts to maintain participants
  • Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with Brooklyn Center Community School and City of Brooklyn Center personnel
  • Refer youth to other appropriate community resources as needed and as necessary
  • Exude confidence and excitement around school and education with a willingness to support young people see their potential in school

Administration

  • Collect registration forms, participant demographic information, and track program attendance
  • Deliver and obtain program evaluation information from participants for program quality assurance and reporting purposes
  • Maintain the online data management system with a commitment to accuracy and regularity

Seek continuous professional development

  • Attend and participate in departmental and program team meetings
  • Participate in educational activities and trainings to improve achievement of program goals

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Girls and Youth Program Manager, who reports to the Girls and Youth Program Director.  The incumbent will interact with Girls and Youth staff, Brooklyn Center Community School employees, City of Brooklyn Center employees, youth participants and parents.

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Minimum of two years college or equivalent, and one year of experience working with youth from low-income and inner city families
  • One year+ of experience planning and facilitating effective, structured groups
  • Strong oral, written and presentation skills
  • Ability to facilitate and teach comprehensive groups
  • Ability to carry out duties independently, as well as in a team setting
  • Ability to work with a variety of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Possess current CPR and First Aid certification, or successfully obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Strong belief in YWCA and ability to convey its importance

Preferred:

  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, or Hmong
  • Experience in youth programming related to adolescent development
  • Experience with data entry in online data management systems

Pay: $13.25-$14.75, dependent on experience

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds

Must be able to travel to Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center
