About the Organization Agency Description: Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles is the nation’s largest Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) legal and civil rights organization and serves more than 15,000 individuals and organizations every year. Description

Position Summary:

As part of our Impact Litigation Unit and under the direction of the Supervising Attorney, the Staff Attorney - Employment Justice is responsible for performing client counseling and representation duties. The Staff Attorney meets with and advises clients of legal rights and issues, conducts legal research and writing, prepares court forms, and performs other legal duties. In addition, the Staff Attorney conducts Community Outreach and Education work, such as working with clients and their communities to organize meetings, workshops, and rallies.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Client Counseling and Representation
  • Meet with and advise clients of legal rights and options for removing barriers to employment, protecting work conditions while employed, and seeking justice for wrongful loss of employment
  • Conduct legal research and writing in response to client needs
  • Prepare court forms and other documents on behalf of clients
  • Represent clients in depositions, hearings, and court or administrative proceedings
  • Research, analyze, draft and applicate policy/legislation
  • Participate in the development and implementation of annual practice work plan
  • Work with Supervising Attorney to meet funding and reporting requirements
  • Coordinate client services with other attorneys
  • Community Outreach and Education
  • Work with clients and their communities organizing meetings, workshops, and rallies
  • Collaborate with community partner organizations
  • Train volunteers and Pro-Bono attorneys to serve clients and communities
  • All other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate and an active member in good standing with the California State Bar
  • Minimum three years of extensive and varied litigation experience, including as lead litigator with co-counsel, and preferably with background in addressing social justice issues
  • Minimum three years of experience of employment law related client representation

  • Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Complex Problem Solving — Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. The ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively

Pay Range $54,080 - $67,000
