Description

Position Summary:

The Community Advocate is a full-time position, working in the Advancing Justice - OC office under the supervision of the Orange County Immigration & Citizenship Project Director. The Community Advocate must be fluent in Vietnamese or Mandarin, and English, and will be responsible for legal intake, screening, and client contact duties for low-income immigrants primarily in the Orange County region. The Community Advocate will also assist in a wide array of administrative and logistical tasks related to outreach and education of various ethnic communities in Orange County regarding citizenship. This may include developing partnerships with community-based organization, government entities and working on social media postings. The Community Advocate will also provide application support at naturalization clinics and administrative support in the areas of: clinic administration and organization, data entry, case management and document preparations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Answer helpline calls from low-income, Vietnamese or Mandarin language- speaking individuals;
  • Assess legal matters, consult with Advancing Justice - OC attorneys and provide in-language assistance;
  • Provide brief services to callers with the support of the OC Supervising Attorney, OC Staff Attorney, or the Citizenship Coordinator;
  • Provide naturalization application assistance to lawful permanent residents under the supervision of an attorney within the OC Immigration & Citizenship Unit;
  • Assisting at on-site, remotely held, and offsite legal clinics, ensuring proper work flow at events;
  • Work closely with the OC Supervising Attorney, Citizenship Coordinator, and the OC Regional Director to provide any additional logistical and coordination support as directed
  • Conduct outreach and education to local communities;
  • Coordinate efforts with external partners, volunteers, and staff;
  • Update internal and external event calendars regularly;
  • Assist in the development and translation of written community outreach and education materials;
  • Provide language support such as interpretation and translation to OC Unit;
  • Attend trainings on legal areas covered by the helpline;
  • Perform administrative duties including but not limited to inputting intakes into centralized database and filing closed intakes;
  • All other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree (relevant degree a plus);
  • Bilingual fluency in Vietnamese or Mandarin, and English (fluency in written AANHPI language a strong plus);
  • Experience or familiarity with AANHPI and/or Orange County immigrant community with a preference for strong ties to the local Vietnamese or Mandarin Speaking communities;
  • Dedication to serving immigrant communities and a sincere commitment to working on behalf of low-income immigrants;
  • Strong preference for applicants with some knowledge and experience in immigration or citizenship legal services;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Must be self-directed, organized, comfortable working independently and have the ability to initiate and coordinate projects in a timely manner;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends, with prior notice; and
  • Valid driver's license and/or access to alternative means of transportation.
