Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Incumbent will implement Navajo traditional healing services for patients within the Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation (TCRHCC) service area. Serves as a resource to the TCRHCC by providing information, training, and learning opportunities regarding Navajo traditional beliefs and healing methods for a variety of clinical and non-clinical services. Will serve as the primary contact for all traditional healing modalities within the TCRHCC service area. This is a grant funded position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs traditional ceremonies for patients, employees and groups as needed.
  2. Collaborates with internal and external departments and agencies to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate the Office of Native and Spiritual Medicine (ONSM) traditional healing program for accessibility and availability of traditional healing services at TCRHCC.
  3. Assists the ONSM Coordinator in policy development for traditional healing services.
  4. Facilitates and administers organizational wide activities that enhance the traditional (holistic) healing environment for patients.
  5. Consults and collaborates with other leaders of traditional medicine, locally and nationally. 
  6. Demonstrates respect and understanding in working with the organization’s multi-disciplines and beliefs.
  7. Contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of strategic planning activities impacting the ONSM program.
  8. Collaborates and establishes partnerships with Navajo and other Native Nations who have traditional (native) healing services and cultural education programs.
  9. Facilitates the referral of patients to the ONSM for traditional (native) healing support, consultation, and treatment.
  10. Provides guidance and assistance to designated traditional healing practitioners who receive patient care referrals.
  11. Collaborates with departments to arrange for traditional rituals/practices to enhance a healthy environment for patients and staff.  Examples of activity include blessing ceremonies for special events, i.e., program or building expansion, project implementation, after emergency codes (Blue, Yellow, etc.), or purification of patient rooms after patient expiration (i.e. miscarriage, stillborn, natural causes, trauma, etc.).  
  12. Educates staff of the available routine (short-term) traditional healing services and assists with scheduling traditional ceremonies as needed.
  13. Assists in the coordination of sweat lodge therapies.
  14. Engage in youth-oriented prevention strategies through culturally appropriate events, and education.
  15. Participate in community events and activities as needed or directed.
  16. Must wear personal protective equipment when necessary.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

Physical:

The work is primarily sedentary with slight physical effort; use of hands and arms, i.e., to coordinate sweat lodge therapy and to operate office equipment such as computer, copier, printer, fax, etc.

Mental:

The ability to assess the needs and situations, in which training and education is needed for patients and employees.  To understand the culture of the organization and offer training and development that meets the needs of TCRHCC management and staff.

 
Position Requirements

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be a member of an established recognized practitioner association i.e: Dine Hataalthi Association, Navajo Nation Medicineman Association, etc.

Certification:

  • Must obtain Basic Life Support certification within six months from date of hire.

Experience:

  • Demonstrates practicing concepts, principles, methods, and techniques of traditional Navajo healing practices.
  • Must be bi-lingual. Fluent Navajo and English.
  • Knowledge of traditional Navajo and other Native American healing practices.

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:

  • Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences
  • Must be able to work independently and be highly motivated, organized, and efficient

  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills; eager to cooperate with others
  • Must be proficient with typing and accurate spelling/grammar; skilled with Microsoft Office software programs
  • Ability to speak Navajo fluently
