The Distance Learning Specialist is a highly collaborative role that will work with the Youth and Adult Engagement Manager to oversee the Learning & Innovation department’s educational distance learning programs and media-based projects. You’ll use online engagement best practices and integrate them into the zoo’s systems.

What you’ll do:

  • Build, develop and manage online learning infrastructure and internal partnerships with other zoo departments to create and deliver highly engaging video conferencing programs.
  • Develop and support public, private, community, and school-based online and videoconferencing programs.
  • Create educational media products for schools, libraries, organizations, individuals, and/or public audiences, including development, filming and production, and assisting with delivery.
  • Facilitate development of a suite of live and recorded broadcasts in collaboration with several zoo departments including Learning & Innovation, Animal Care, Wildlife Conservation, and Horticulture; other zoo stakeholders; and outside partners in alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Participate in and facilitate meetings, trainings and professional development to discuss, plan, and develop departmental strategy, marketing plans and professional growth plans around online and distance learning programs and platforms.
  • Provide technical, logistical, and/or procedural support to customers and users of distance learning equipment, web sites and services.
  • Train and support instructors and staff in the use of distance learning equipment, software, applications, and effective presentation techniques.
  • Establish evaluation plan to assess effectiveness of distance learning programs in meeting learning and institutional outcomes. Collect, manage and report program statistics.
  • Research and write articles, blog posts, fliers, publications, grant report/narrative information, communications/interpretive materials, and other promotional and supporting materials.
  • Work with the Development department to participate in grant writing, grant reports, donor cultivation tours, events, and other fundraising initiatives.

Who we’re looking for:

  • You have at least two years’ related experience plus a bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • You’re familiar with and skilled in Learning Management Systems (LMS), web development, integrated software systems and applications, and videoconference interfaces.
  • You’re a great communicator and experienced coalition builder, both online and in-person. You’re experienced in communicating scientific information in formal and informal settings.
  • You’re a team player who’s equally comfortably participating in, leading, and motivating teams.
  • You know how to bring together and support different perspectives from diverse populations to come to solutions and identify areas of growth.
  • You’re comfortable representing the department in cross-departmental meetings.
  • You’re customer service oriented and work well with internal and external partners. You enjoy working with the public, including diverse populations and people of all ages and abilities.
  • Your project management skills include a keen eye for details and accuracy, organizational skills, the ability to creatively manage projects with many moving parts, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meeting deadlines.
  • You can prioritize your workload and schedules in a fast-paced environment with multiple agendas.
  • You’re open to experimentation, learning, adjustments along the way, and can push through ambiguity to deliver results.
  • You’re proficient with internet research and Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • You have excellent English reading and writing skills, including the ability to read, analyze, interpret, and present common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. You have the ability to write grants, reports, speeches, and articles for publication for formal and informal audiences.
  • You’re able to work a flexible schedule, which may include some evenings or weekends.

Pay: $60k per year, plus benefits. This grant-funded position is currently funded until 12/31/2020. We hope to secure additional funding to extend the position.
