Store Manager, Academy Museum

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Director of Retail, the Store Manager will train our retail associates and manage the daily operations of the store including the fulfillment of e-commerce orders. You will help coach, monitor, and appraise retail staff to provide first-class retail services to visitors, while encouraging enthusiasm for and knowledge about exhibitions and items in the collection.

You Will:

  • Open the museum shop for business to the public, visitors, and patrons of the museum.
  • Assist in staffing and stocking prior to our opening.
  • Assist in developing and producing events such as book releases, book signings, product launches and other public events.
  • Help communicate retail operations information to museum management and staff.
  • Maintain a safe retail environment and create a polished aesthetic for the retail area.
  • Work with retail staff and security to minimize shrinkage.
  • Monitor staff customer service levels and lead by example in providing service of the highest quality.
  • Increase customer loyalty by establishing relationships with potential and actual repeat customers.
  • Oversee and resolve customer service requests.
  • Complete all required ongoing training, including security training, audience engagement and collection training, visitor orientation training and product information training.
  • Build relationships to foster teamwork and develop partnerships.
  • Help manage staff and additional contractors.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of retail business experience.
  • 5+ years supervisory experience.
  • Experience with recognized, successful high-end, specialty store and design-focused retail.
  • Experience providing feedback and encouraging excellent sales performance.
  • Ability to build relationships to foster teamwork and develop partnerships.
  • Experience with Teamwork POS system a plus, Excel (can maintain complex spreadsheets) and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, holidays, and weekends: (Prior to opening standard office hours will be Monday through Friday. After the opening the schedule will include Saturdays and Sundays)
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.

  • Multi-lingual skills a plus.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Intermittent walking, standing, and stooping.
  • Lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Work in public spaces
