Description

The Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health seeks an experienced stewardship director to join our dynamic team dedicated to raising resources to improve child and maternal health. Our 90-member staff directs all fundraising for Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and for the maternal and child health programs at Stanford University School of Medicine. The Foundation’s five-year fundraising average totals $165 million a year.

The Director of Stewardship is responsible for developing strategies to engage and steward donors and prospective donors in support of the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and the maternal and child health programs at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The director oversees implementing the overall stewardship strategy for our donors with a special emphasis on those who have made the largest philanthropic investments. In addition, s/he develops the process and structure to produce tools and proposals to facilitate the solicitation of major gifts. The director leads a team of eight who develop and produce high impact materials that excite interest and strengthen donor connection and loyalty.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and drive the strategic plan for the Foundation’s stewardship program. S/he is responsible for ensuring the successful execution of all stewardship tactics designed to enhance the donor’s philanthropic experience and increase the likelihood of initial and sustained support including: acknowledgement letters; impact reports; Center reports, financial reports for endowed funds; donor recognition; and other donor-centric products and services.
  • Manage the development of gift proposals and other tools developed to engage major gift donors and prospects in philanthropic opportunities at the Hospital and/or School of Medicine.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with gift officers. Develop a deep understanding of the pipeline of solicitations and corresponding need for proposals or other content. Partner with gift officers to develop the most compelling messages in the case for support.
  • Partner with physicians and scientists pursuing leading research and innovative clinical care in order to translate their objectives and goals into compelling content for both solicitations and stewardship of our donor community.
  • Consult with gift officers to identify key stewardship opportunities and develop personalized plans for our largest donors; further develop and lead a Top Donor Stewardship program.
  • Oversee the master stewardship schedule and manage information tracking process to ensure that all gifts requiring personalized acknowledgement and stewardship receive it in a timely manner.
  • Manage and coach the stewardship team providing them with opportunities for continued growth and development; deploy the team on activities with the greatest impact on our largest prospects and donors.
  • Develop tools that field officers can leverage to effectively engage and steward groups of our mid-level donors.
  • Oversee donor recognition and signage at the Hospital and School; update donor walls; and develop and maintain policies around recognition levels.
  • Partner with the University on the establishment of endowed professorships and appointment of holders, and together with the Director of Events, ensure the delivery of personalized stewardship for donors of endowed chairs.
  • Work in close partnership with the Senior Director of Development Communications and field teams to effectively share, disseminate, and leverage content across donor audiences.

 

 

 
Position Requirements

Education and Experience

  • A college degree in a related discipline
  • 7+ years of relevant experience
  • A deep commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
  • A strong interest in supporting the philanthropic priorities of the Foundation and a deep understanding of philanthropy and the ability to articulate a compelling case for support through multiple mediums.

Skills

  • Exceptional communication skills, including writing and proofreading; ability to translate technical and scientific information into lay language; talent in developing and presenting proposals in a compelling fashion.
  • A strong people leader with proven management skills and experience in establishing a team- and goal-oriented environment that empowers and develops staff while creating an inclusive team culture.
  • Ability to form and sustain strong working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders in a complex environment
  • Experience partnering with senior development staff in developing complex gift proposals with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to think strategically and to translate vision into a workable tactical plan
  • Strong organizational skills and a proven record of prioritizing and managing multiple projects under deadlines.
  • Ability to think creatively and to present out-of-the-box ideas in a compelling and persuasive manner.
  • The highest standards of professional behavior and integrity, and the ability to treat confidential information with discretion.

 

To be considered for Senior Director the candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated experience developing message strategy and leading a team in the execution of that plan across an organization with subject matter expertise in stewardship and/or donor communications

Communication – ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders and develop compelling communication pieces for the donor community
