POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for overseeing the psychological service needs of individuals, families, groups, and the community at large with a primary focus on children. Also entails conducting formal and informal assessments, conducting clinical interviews, and developing treatment plans for children, adolescents, and adults with complex mental or emotional problems. Duties may include facilitating groups, conducting educational workshops, participating in outreach programs. Candidate must adhere to evidence-based practice guidelines, professional standards, and Tribal, State, and Federal legal requirements. Work schedule consists of taking call on an assigned, rotating schedule that includes weekdays, weekends, nights and holidays.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Depending on the credentials of the incumbent:
- Assists clients to gain insight, define goals, and plan action to achieve effective personal, social, educational, and vocational development and adjustment. Communicates in a positive, effective manner with client, family and all internal and external providers.
- Provides occupational, educational, and other information to enable individual to formulate realistic educational and vocational plans. Consults reference material, such as textbooks, manuals, and journals to identify symptoms, make diagnoses, and develop approach to treatment.
- Develops treatment plan including type, frequency, intensity, and duration of therapy in collaboration with the treatment team. Evaluates effectiveness of counseling or treatment, and modifies plan as needed.
- Assesses client problems, determines advisability of counseling, and refers client to other resources as needed.
- Provides clinical supervision. Directs, coordinates, and evaluates activities for non-licensed staff and student interns engaged in patient evaluation and treatment.
- Provides mental health services and advice to private firms and community agencies on individual cases or mental health programs. Conducts individual and family counseling sessions regarding mental health or emotional problems, such as stress, substance abuse, and family situations.
- Plans and develops accredited mental health service programs in psychiatric center or hospital, in collaboration with psychiatrists and other professional staff. Develops, directs, and participates in staff training programs.
- Utilizes treatment methods, such as psychotherapy, behavior modification, stress reduction therapy, psychodrama, and play therapy. Observes individual at play, in group interactions, or other situations to detect indications of mental deficiency, abnormal behavior, or maladjustment.
- Interviews individuals, couples, or families, and reviews records to obtain information on medical, psychological, emotional, relationship, or other problems.
- Continues to develop knowledge and understanding about the history, traditions, values, family systems, and artistic expression of groups served as well as uses appropriate methodological approaches, skills, and techniques that reflect an understanding of culture.
- Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role.
- Performs other duties as assigned or directed.

Physical:
Must be able to sit at a desk for long periods of time, write legibly and use a computer terminal. Must be able to hear and talk over the telephone and in person with others. Some physical exertion such as long hours of standing, walking and recurring lifting of light to moderately heavy objects is required.
Mental:
Child/Family Mental Health Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner must possess and demonstrate a broad knowledge of mental health treatment, functions and activities, effectively integrating mental health treatments with medical and community health activities. Must be able to prioritize and use good judgment. Incumbent must be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted.
