Position Summary: The senior finance manager will work under the direction of the chief financial officer to develop, analyze and manage financial data to inform decisions that impact the strategic direction of AFT’s financial operations and the terms and conditions of employment. The primary responsibilities of this position involve managing AFT’s contracts and program expenditure controls, monitoring financial close activities, conducting financial reviews and internal audits, supporting AFT’s annual budget process and preparing financial and regulatory reports for AFT and its related entities and affiliates.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage the procedures and expenditure approval protocols related to executing AFT contracts with its consultants and service providers and develop reports to summarize contract activity for the AFT officers and management.
  • Compile budget reports and financial statement documents from Great Plains (GP) and related reporting and business intelligence programs for reporting to department directors, AFT officers, and the Executive Council.
  • Reconcile accounts, review general ledger data, communicate any financial discrepancies or errors and recommend the appropriate reclassification or journal entry to resolve the matter.
  • Monitor the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close and the preparation of financial statements and supplemental reports for all AFT funds and related entities.
  • Lead the treasury and risk functions of AFT, including but not limited to cash flow, investments, insurance programs, and lines of credit and loans.
  • Plan and perform internal review engagements or other agreed upon procedures for AFT and its state and local affiliates in consultation with union officers, management and staff.
  • Perform detailed testing and document review at the affiliate site or AFT headquarters based on the scope of audit and document findings and recommendations in a detailed, comprehensive report for presentation to board members, officers, or other staff.
  • Present audit issues to management as they are identified and work with affiliates to create and implement solutions to mitigate any issues.
  • Assist affiliates in the preparation of regulatory filings such as the Internal Revenue Service’s Form 990 and Department of Labor’s annual financial reports (LM-2, LM-3, LM-4, etc.).
  • Support affiliates with dispute resolution for any problems that may arise with government agencies and facilitate the submission of bond policy claims on behalf of affiliates.
  • Assist and monitor AFT Organizing Projects to ensure compliance with accounting standards and statutory requirements; prepare regulatory reports as needed.
  • Develop and present state-of-the-art training programs and materials for AFT and its affiliates, virtually or in-person, for both small and large groups.
  • Supervise and develop staff, conduct and document performance evaluations, and foster a team environment built on collaboration, integrity, and support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field required and ten (10) years of professional accounting and/or full scope auditing experience at a national CPA firm or similar.
  • Active Certified Public Accountant or similar license required.
  • Non-profit or public sector auditing and accounting experience preferred.
  • Labor union accounting and auditing experience is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills with proficient use of Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, and Excel required.
  • High ethical standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and improve processes.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • General knowledge of GAAP accounting principles and/or financial background.
  • Experience using QuickBooks and Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains is highly desirable.
