Description

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is a grant funded position by the Diabetes Grant.  As such, this position is contingent upon the renewal of the Diabetes Grant at TCRCC.  The incumbent’s primary responsibility is to provide clinical periodontal therapy and oral hygiene instruction to the dental patients that have Type I or Type II Diabetes or are pre-diabetic under the general supervision of staff dentists and dental specialists in a dental public health framework.  He or she will act as a liaison between the Dental Program and the Diabetes Program sitting on the Diabetes committee when asked, performing dental screenings, generating quarterly activity reports, and organizing dental exam days for Diabetic patients registered at TCRHCC.  This position involves giving presentations and/or demonstrations to community members as well as to staff.  The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions listed below proficiently and willingly.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Willing and able to use ultrasonic cleaning devices (ie. piezon, cavitron) proficiently and as primary means of debridement in addition to using hand scaling instruments to remove supra- and subgingival calculus
  2. Provide comprehensive periodontal care for all dental patients referred to RDH by dental providers.  This includes periodontal therapy (ie. prophylaxis, scaling & root planning, gross debridement, etc), as well as in-depth oral hygiene instruction
  3. Administer local anesthesia under supervision
  4. Must be able to take radiographs and interpret them
  5. Administer caries prevention agents and desensitizing agents
  6. Develop and maintain a perio recall system for all patients referred to RDH by dental providers
  7. Develop and revise oral health instructional materials and education techniques
  8. Compile statistical data and written reports as requested
  9. Carry out tests and report on results of new dental hygiene products
  10. Record and update medical and dental histories at each patient visit
  11. Review patients’ dietary habits and provide guidance on proper diet as it relates to oral health
  12. Take and pour up impressions for study casts
  13. Remove sutures
  14. Provide in-service training to dental and non-dental personnel at TCRHCC
  15. Provide presentations to community as needed
  16. Will work with the Electronic Dental Record (EDR) and Electronic Health Record (EHR) programs; training will be provided
  17. Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role
  18. Performs other related duties as assigned. 

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical:

Position requires long periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, and reaching during clinical procedures.  Above average dexterity is required.  Work involves danger of exposure to radiation.  Incumbent needs to be positioned at least six feet away from x-ray source when taking radiographs to protect against radiation.  Incumbent will wear face masks and eye protection during treatment procedures to avoid contracting communicable diseases and to prevent injury to the eyes.   

Mental:
Work consists of clinical duties requiring performance of varied educational and therapeutic
dental hygiene procedures and techniques.  Work requires an assessment of the oral health needs of each patient.  Incumbent must be able to review medical histories and make referrals to dentist as needed.

 
Position Requirements

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Must have a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene
  • Must be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist in a State or Territory of the United States or District of Columbia
  • Must be certified to administer local anesthesia for dental treatment
  • Must be certified as a radiographer in their field

Certification:

  • Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association for at least 90 days after start of employment and must be maintained during employment at TCRHCC

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. If a new graduate, there must be positive references from teachers and supervisors from the dental hygiene program attended. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:

  • Positive working relationships with others
  • Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints
  • Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences or tardiness
  • The incumbent must also be proficient in the use of ultrasonic cleaning instruments (ie. piezon, cavitron) and be willing to use them as a primary means of calculus removal
