POSITION SUMMARY
This position is a grant funded position by the Diabetes Grant. As such, this position is contingent upon the renewal of the Diabetes Grant at TCRCC. The incumbent’s primary responsibility is to provide clinical periodontal therapy and oral hygiene instruction to the dental patients that have Type I or Type II Diabetes or are pre-diabetic under the general supervision of staff dentists and dental specialists in a dental public health framework. He or she will act as a liaison between the Dental Program and the Diabetes Program sitting on the Diabetes committee when asked, performing dental screenings, generating quarterly activity reports, and organizing dental exam days for Diabetic patients registered at TCRHCC. This position involves giving presentations and/or demonstrations to community members as well as to staff. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions listed below proficiently and willingly.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Willing and able to use ultrasonic cleaning devices (ie. piezon, cavitron) proficiently and as primary means of debridement in addition to using hand scaling instruments to remove supra- and subgingival calculus
- Provide comprehensive periodontal care for all dental patients referred to RDH by dental providers. This includes periodontal therapy (ie. prophylaxis, scaling & root planning, gross debridement, etc), as well as in-depth oral hygiene instruction
- Administer local anesthesia under supervision
- Must be able to take radiographs and interpret them
- Administer caries prevention agents and desensitizing agents
- Develop and maintain a perio recall system for all patients referred to RDH by dental providers
- Develop and revise oral health instructional materials and education techniques
- Compile statistical data and written reports as requested
- Carry out tests and report on results of new dental hygiene products
- Record and update medical and dental histories at each patient visit
- Review patients’ dietary habits and provide guidance on proper diet as it relates to oral health
- Take and pour up impressions for study casts
- Remove sutures
- Provide in-service training to dental and non-dental personnel at TCRHCC
- Provide presentations to community as needed
- Will work with the Electronic Dental Record (EDR) and Electronic Health Record (EHR) programs; training will be provided
- Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical:
Position requires long periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, and reaching during clinical procedures. Above average dexterity is required. Work involves danger of exposure to radiation. Incumbent needs to be positioned at least six feet away from x-ray source when taking radiographs to protect against radiation. Incumbent will wear face masks and eye protection during treatment procedures to avoid contracting communicable diseases and to prevent injury to the eyes.
Mental:
Work consists of clinical duties requiring performance of varied educational and therapeutic
dental hygiene procedures and techniques. Work requires an assessment of the oral health needs of each patient. Incumbent must be able to review medical histories and make referrals to dentist as needed.
