About the Organization Headquartered in Solon, Ohio, HDT Global is the industry leader in engineering, designing and manufacturing leading-edge military expeditionary products, rugged industrial/commercial products, and products for medical rehabilitation. Location HDT (Fredericksburg, VA)  

The location of this position is geographically flexible.


This position is responsible for meeting annual Orders targets and corporate growth objectives in Defense related business with US Department of Defense branches of service and other US Federal agencies. The BD Senior Director for Shelters and Systems is expected to both lead others and personally support customer needs for products and services through program office coordinated acquisitions.


  • Manages a portfolio of customer accounts focused on military soft wall and rigid wall opportunities that include total base camp solutions, command posts, billeting, and ground vehicle solutions in support of expeditionary mission operations
  • Maintains personal new business pipeline while overseeing team members’ pipeline activities
  • Develops and conducts the evaluation plus implementation of new initiatives and business opportunities for the Company under direction of the senior business development leader
  • Provides strategic and tactical input to company executives by evaluating new initiatives and business opportunities
  • Conducts market analysis and competitive assessments in the development of strategic business winning campaigns
  • Implements capture strategies that promote long term, sustainable growth aligned with customer needs
  • Manages and influences the preparation of proposals, business plans, proposal work statements and specifications, operating budgets and financial terms/conditions of contract(s)
  • Responsible for working across functional areas and with Program Managers, Legal, Contracts, Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing and Inside Sales
  • Responsible for marketing the company and its products, developing quotes, negotiating contract pricing, closing sales and monitoring execution
  • Responsible for understanding customer requirements and how HDT can best meet those requirements including new or derivative product development within HDT’s core competencies
  • Requires travel to attend tradeshows, industry day events, and meetings at customer, industry partner, and HDT manufacturing facilities
  • Supports, communicates, reinforces and defends the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • Adheres to all quality and safety standards
  • Supports other projects and performs duties as assigned


Position Requirements

  • BS in Engineering, Marketing, Business Administration or related discipline. MBA preferred


  • 10 plus years’ experience in Business Development, Engineering and/or Sales
  • Experience in DoD acquisition process required
  • Prior US military service is a plus
  • Ability to develop/create proposals, RFQs, non-disclosure agreements and teaming agreements
  • Experience in business operations including but not limited to bookings, revenue and annual operating plans
  • Sales and business development experience with major defense contractors
  • Experience building and managing a robust new business pipeline from opportunity identification through the entire capture management process, which includes proposal development and successful negotiations
  • Familiarity with company products, markets and technologies

  • Prior supervisory experience in a corporate environment
  • Must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment
  • Knowledge of manufacturing operations is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills; able to communicate effectively with management and personnel at all levels, customers/potential customers, and government representatives
  • Able to work extended hours
  • Travel as required
  • Possesses quality orientation and high attention to detail
  • Possesses strong computer skills with demonstrated proficiency in standard business software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office)
