Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Write and speak clearly and coherently in the Target Language and English;
• Translate or interpret conversations;
• Maintain the integrity and meaning of the material through translations;
• Translate general and technical material to and from a Target Language and English;
• Possess a thorough understanding of IC transliteration guidelines and directives;
• Quickly scan and accurately translate a large amount of material;
• Provide quality translations in the time allotted;
• Read a variety of unfamiliar subjects, relate ideas and make inferences, and accurately interpret the intent of the writer;
• Converse professionally in formal and informal situations, resolve problems, work with unfamiliar topics, provide explanations, offer supported opinions and hypothesize;

???????Additional Responsibilities

  • Linguists shall be prepared and qualified to provide translation or transcription services to include the translation of written, electronic and multi-media material to and from English and a Target Language. Materials include, but are not limited to,: business, legal, medical, technical, documents, software, website localization for Internet and intranet, video subtitling and captioning. Services also include, but are not limited to, formatting, proofreading, editing, graphic design, and desktop publishing.

  • Linguists may be requested to perform interpretation services (i.e., the interpretation of oral communication to and from English and a Target Language), if qualified. Interpretation includes, but is not limited to, consecutive, escort, telephonic, and voiceovers. Interpreter forums may include meetings, conferences, seminars, briefings, training, military operations, law enforcement, intelligence and operational support. Additionally, linguists supporting low-density Target Languages may be asked to process workflow functions, such as performing Quality Assurance (QA), when not utilized for translation purposes.
Position Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Native proficiency preferred, not required
  • Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level 3/3 (Listening/Reading) in the target language
  • Able to understand the essentials of all speech in a standard dialect and to follow accurately the essentials of conversations between educated native speakers, understand radio broadcasts, news stories similar to wire service reports, oral reports, some oral technical reports and public addresses on non-technical subjects
  • Able to produce idiomatic translations of non-technical material using correct syntax and expression from English to target language and vice versa, with the meaning and intent of the original source preserved
  • Able to write comprehensibly in English and choose the equivalent expression into the required target language that both fully conveys and best matches the meaning intended in the source language


Computer Skills

  • Be proficient in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Power Point) and using a computer and related devices,
  • Familiarity with Computer Assisted Translation Tools, such as Translation Memory, Terminology Management Databases, and/or on-line dictionaries.
