NC START Center Coach

Position Summary:

START Center Coach provides support to persons with co-occurring developmental disabilities and mental or behavioral health needs who are temporarily accessing the START Center for crisis or planned crisis stabilization. This staff participates in the daily routine of the home and provides support for habilitative activities, personal care, health care and other activities. The START Coach also helps ensure a therapeutic environment at the START Center. The START Center Coach participates as part of comprehensive START model services that collaborate with individual's primary provider and clinical home, community crisis services, family and others. The NC START Coach functions in a leadership capacity without supervisory responsibilities. Leadership duties include but are not limited to: training of Center counselors; direct consultation with clinical team members; coaching and training of therapeutic interventions; oversight of guest crisis interventions; clinical documentation responsibilities; and direct consolation with START’s supervisory/leadership team members.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists individuals with daily activities, personal care, behavioral health needs, physical health, overall wellness, and leisure activities in a therapeutic capacity.
  • Orients new Center guests/individuals to the home, program policies, rules and activities.
  • Establishes rapport with guests with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviors, while maintaining respect for each consumer's dignity, individuality and right to confidentiality.
  • Maintains professional boundaries with guests and follows ethical and licensing guidelines.
  • Monitors individuals/guests for any mental health or behavioral symptoms and provides crisis prevention, intervention, and de-escalation supports in accordance with the START model and the individual’s crisis prevention plan.
  • Participates in development and implementation of individual’s Cross System Crisis Prevention and Intervention Plan (CSCPIP).
  • Plans, structures and prompts social and leisure time activities, including activities that build skills self-regulation, stress management, communication, adaptive living and daily living.
  • Serves as a positive representative for agency with other professionals, families and the community.
  • Maintains timely documentation, progress notes, and other data, including incident and accident reports.
  • Responds to individual safety needs, including reporting significant changes in behavior and health.
  • Communicates with other staff and supervisor on progress, needs, concerns and changes.
  • Performs housekeeping duties as assigned, including meal preparation in accordance with individual dietary needs and preferences.
  • Adheres to program standards and policies as well as local, state and federal regulations
  • Assists with discharge planning.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (human services field preferred)
  • Recent College Graduates interested in pursuing Graduate Level Programs in Social Work/Psychology/OT/PT or Nursing Encouraged to Apply
  • Direct support experience with both developmental disabilities and mental health populations preferred.
  • Experience with crisis prevention and intervention services preferred.
  • Maintain valid license and insurance for personal vehicles utilized for work;
  • Complete within specified time period the trainings as required by agency and service model.
