Description

Thorlabs is currently seeking applications from scientists holding a degree in experimental physics or a closely related field to directly lead the efforts of our Technical Marketing Team, which is responsible for the quality, accuracy, and continual evolution of our website through the development of new content and feature recommendations; overseeing our tradeshow efforts; and maintaining our brand message during the fulfillment of all marketing requests. Hence, leadership of this team frequently requires interaction and collaboration with multiple departments and business units within the organization.

With a customer-centric philosophy at the forefront of all decisions, Thorlabs has spent its 30-year history developing a marketing strategy that is underpinned by the needs of our customers. As the leader of our Technical Marketing efforts, the successful candidate will need to continue that tradition as updates and content additions are made to the 2000+ urls that provide product-specific details for over 20,000 items, as well as during the creation of all other marketing collateral.

Candidates for this role should be highly familiar with a wide range of photonics equipment, be able to see linkages between Thorlabs’ product lines, and be able to make significant recommendations for improvement to our product offerings and web functionality. In addition to extensive laboratory experience, the candidate must have strong writing and presentation skills in English, high attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to appropriately prioritize requests and deliver results in a timely fashion.

The Technical Marketing Manager position is at our headquarters facility in Newton, NJ.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures web presentations/updates, tradeshow materials, and other marketing collateral (internal requests, giveaways, etc.) are of high quality, technically accurate, align with the organization’s brand/design standards, and are delivered in a timely fashion.
  • Generates proposals for organizational changes to the website’s visual navigation, using Google analytics and sales data to guide decision making.
  • Oversees the development of tradeshow materials, ensuring they meet all requirements and are finalized within the necessary timelines
  • Responsible for partnering with the Director of Marketing & Customer Service to develop a strategy for each tradeshow/roadshow event and then overseeing the efforts of the tradeshow coordinator(s) to ensure successful tradeshow/roadshow events (planning, logistics, hotel bookings, literature, etc.) that align with Thorlabs’ brand standards and remain within budget
  • Partners with the Web Team and Business Units as necessary to address customer-facing issues on the website
  • Partners with the Director of Marketing & Customer Service, CEO, NPI Marketing Manager, and web programming manager to identify, develop, and test new tools and features that further enhance the shopping experience on Thorlabs’ website
  • Develops SOPs and maintains a philosophy of continuous improvement when it comes to internal process improvements that will enhance workflow and productivity
  • Works to establish processes that minimize the time it takes to address critical issues pertaining to the information we publish
  • Partners with internal SEO expert to update presentations as appropriate to increase traffic
  • Partners with senior management to minimize scrapping costs resulting from obsolescence
  • Obtains data from the sales cube as necessary to answer product-specific questions whose answers influence web placement/updates
  • Oversees implementation of product presentations tied to acquisitions as appropriate
  • Considers mid-cycle price change requests from Business Units and makes recommendations to senior management
  • Partners with senior management to align trademark efforts WW
  • Sets annual goals for Technical Marketing team members and facilitates successful completion of those goals
  • Coaches, supports, develops, and mentors individual employees
  • Partners with senior management on annual budget
  • Ability to guide teams, clearly and effectively communicating desired outcomes and addressing issues in a timely fashion
  • Supports NPI Marketing Team projects via feedback from subject matter experts residing on the Technical Marketing Team
  • Is fully versed on the Technical Marketer role and contributes directly to deliverables as necessary to achieve desired outcomes.

 

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in experimental physics or a closely related field with extensive hands-on photonics experience, or equivalent work experience
  • 2+ years of applicable marketing experience is preferred.
  • Native English language writing skills
  • Strong organizational skills, planning, skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask, be detail oriented, and solve moderately complex management and technical challenges, all while under tight time constraints.
  • Strong interpersonal/leadership skills
  • Ability to establish appropriate metrics to drive efficient process improvement initiatives
  • Strong quantitative skills, with an ability to quickly analyze data and act on it
  • Must be willing to work extended hours as necessary to meet goals/deadlines
