The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is seeking a dynamic Chief Creative Content and Public Engagement Officer to drive strategy, planning, and cohesion among all areas of creative content creation and learning, including the Museum’s public-facing programs, exhibitions, screenings, public programs, and educational programs.

Highlighting the unique position of this institution as the premier museum of cinema in the world's movie-making capital, the Academy Museum will feature exhibitions and programs to illuminate the complex and fascinating world of cinema—its art, technology, artists, history, and social impact—through a variety of diverse and engaging voices. Global in outlook and grounded in the unparalleled collections and expertise of the Academy, the Academy Museum will tell complete stories of movie-making—celebratory, educational, and sometimes critical and uncomfortable.

With an eye on inclusivity, accessibility, and telling the diverse stories of movies and movie artists, the executive will oversee the teams and related budget lines that conceptualize and implement the content for the museum’s galleries, educational programs, public programs, and film screenings and series. You will report to the Director or the Academy Museum and direct reports will include the museum’s Director of Curatorial Affairs, Director of Programming, and Director of Education and Public Engagement.

The executive will have an established record of organizing major programs, publications, exhibitions and strong public speaking skills.

You Will:

  • Develop and execute a consistent vision for the Academy Museum’s programming, curatorial and education teams.

  • Work with Academy members and other film artists and scholars on linking content experts to the Museum’s exhibitions, public programs, screenings, and educational programs.
  • Ensure cross-departmental connectivity between all areas of content creation and create clear communication and efficient processes.
  • Align the focus of the Museum’s collections strategy with the Museum’s programming, curatorial and educational programs.
  • Liaise with the Museum’s Inclusion Advisory Committee and Academy Branch Task Forces to maximize knowledge, ideas, and expertise.
  • Ensure that exhibitions, programs, and educational initiatives showcase a breadth and depth of voices, ideas, stories, and craft areas.
  • In collaboration with the programming team, ensure a robust year-round calendar of screenings, panel discussions, and programs.

  • Partner with the Academy Museum’s creative, publications, marketing and PR teams to create dynamic, accessible and compassionate messaging and materials.
  • Work with the curatorial, exhibitions, programming, and collections teams, liaise with the Academy’s Library and Archival teams to create a comprehensive collections strategy.

  • Collaborate with the curatorial and exhibitions teams, in developing a diverse, engaging, and powerful exhibitions calendar – both on-site and traveling.
  • Network with peers nationally and internationally to further develop collection exchanges, programming partnerships, and co-organize exhibitions.
  • Work with the Museum leadership to cultivate, solicit, and steward trustees, collectors, donors, and movie artists for gifts, including gifts to the collection.
  • Leverage the power and expertise and the Academy to maximize the potential of Academy Museum’s programs, exhibitions, and programs.
  • Help oversee the development of the Museum Board’s Programming, Collections, and Exhibitions Committees.

 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • An advanced degree in cinema studies, cultural anthropology, or a related field is required, and a PhD is preferred.
  • 10+ years experience programming, or curating film programs featuring a broad spectrum of genres, areas, and artists.
  • A background in working for cinema organizations that reach diverse audiences and a commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion.
  • Established record of organizing major programs or exhibitions.
  • Outstanding public speaking skills with the ability to develop cooperative working relationships
