This Grant Writer position is an integral part of our Institutional Giving team by conducting basic research on potential funding sources, developing, reviewing, and editing institutional grant proposals; maintaining databases; and supporting staff and administration in developing proposals.

 What you’ll do:

  • Collaborate with the Director of Institutional Giving to set annual targets and goals for the grants program, including developing quarterly and annual metrics.
  • Develop and oversee grants pipeline.
  • Identify and research potential funding sources;
  • Outline engagement strategies and plans for building relationships with institutional giving representatives;
  • Identify potential funding sources that match the zoo’s program goals and priorities through databases, publications, and government websites.
  • Cultivate, manage, and steward relationships with potential and current foundation program officers and equivalents.
  • Manage the grant development process for corporate, foundation, and government grant applications from start to finish.
  • Work with internal zoo staff and external organization partners to ensure all projects accurately reflect all updated and relevant information.
  • Support all financial aspects of grants management - budget modifications, monitoring spending, and meeting with program administrators, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Update general informational materials in coordination with the zoo’s Communications department.
  • Maintain grant database to track grant deadlines, submissions, etc.
  • Facilitate grant management for a select number of awarded grants.

  • You’re organized, a great planner, and are known for doing what you say you will.
  • You’re detail-oriented and like to think through processes and systems to make everyone’s work more efficient.
  • You enjoy working on a team, learning from colleagues, and sharing your experiences and ideas with others.
  • You like to share stories about the causes you care about, both in writing and in conversation with institutional funders.
  • You love when things run smoothly yet also enjoy thinking on the go to address an unexpected situation.
  • You have a Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience writing grants, whether to private foundations, government funders or both. An equivalent combination of education and experience works too!
  • You’re familiar with local, state, and federal grant guidelines.

Pay: $70,000 per year, plus benefits.
