Description

Position Description:

The Public Relations Fellow will gain hands-on experience helping to build awareness for the issues of hunger and food insecurity in the greater Washington region by assisting with the food bank’s media outreach and public engagement work. The Fellow will play an important role in supporting the mission of the food bank by supporting activities that generate greater visibility for an often-hidden problem.

As a member of the food bank’s Marketing and Communications team, the Public Relations Fellow will work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to craft pitches and press releases; support the creation of quotes and talking points for panels, interviews, and other engagements; research prospects for media outreach and update the food bank’s media-monitoring database; and contribute to the development of quarterly media communications plans. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment; is a self-starting strategic thinker; and demonstrates the spirit of creativity, flexibility, and resourcefulness that a nonprofit environment demands.

Essential Functions:

  • Stay apprised of developing local and national news stories and draft pitch ideas based on both opportunities presented by the external news cycle and the food bank’s programs and initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of quarterly media engagement plans
  • Draft press releases for CAFB initiatives, including program launches and corporate gift announcements, and provide review of press releases sent by others in which CAFB is included
  • Coordinate logistics of media engagements, including interview scheduling, managing media on site, and post-interview follow up
  • Assist with talking points for media appearances, including data gathering and fact checking as needed
  • Create and update journalist engagement lists in the food bank’s media management platform
  • Oversee the media page on the food bank’s website, updating recent news stories and press releases, and ensuring the accuracy of information in the food bank’s media toolkit
  • Coordinating with other team members, assist with identifying news stories and other engaging content, either about or related to CAFB’s work, for use in CAFB’s social media channels
  • Other duties as assigned
 
Position Requirements
  • BA/MA degree or significant coursework in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or a related discipline

 

Other Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and learn quickly in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong understanding of media cycles and best practices for engaging journalists
  • Familiarity with both local and national business and industry media outlets and associated journalists
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Solid experience with using social media including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc., to generate earned media
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team
  • Familiarity with hunger, food insecurity, and related issues desirable

Fellowship information:

  • Position duration is 6-months, 20-hours per week, with flexible days and timing within normal business hours (8:30 – 5:00 PM)
  • Ideal timeframe is July – December
  • This fellowship pays a hourly rate of 15.20/hr

 

Physical requirements:

  • Physical activities involve sitting for 80% of the work day.
  • Occasionally lifts office supplies up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to travel to sites, as needed, throughout the metropolitan area.

 

Work Environment:

  • Normal business office hours, with frequent tight deadlines
  • Work is generally remote 3-4 days per week and in-office at the food bank’s building 1-2 days per week (measures are in place for significant social distancing)
