Library Conservation Fellow 

Description

The Kress Fellowship in Library Conservation is a temporary, one-year, full-time position beginning September 2020. Application closes July 31, 2020.

 

You will work under the supervision of the Head of Library Conservation and will perform the full spectrum of paper conservation treatment activities including written and photographic documentation, identification of historical material and structures including condition, technical research, dialog with collection managers about treatment choices, and the completion of minor and complex single item treatments and housings. You should have an interest in working with library and archive materials. Preference will be given to those applicants with a specialization in photograph conservation.

 

The Fellowship stipend is $37,000 and the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library is pleased to provide an additional funding for professional development and research travel.

 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform book, paper and photograph conservation treatments with full documentation.
  • Work on complex conservation treatments in collaboration with conservators.
  • Prepare items for loans and exhibits, including hinging, mounting, stabilization, specialized packing, and condition documentation.
  • Fabricate/adapt specialized storage housings for the collection.
  • Assist in monitoring the environments.
  • General lab duties and supplies maintenance.
 
Position Requirements
  • Master’s degree in art conservation from a recognized training conservation program required.
  • One to two years of professional experience.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and balance multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and interact professionally, effectively and collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Ability to lift, push or carry 25 lb. boxes.
