Position Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a high school diploma supplemented by one year of experience as a firefighter; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Requires a valid Georgia driver’s license with Class E/F endorsement(s).

Must possess and maintain State of Georgia Firefighting Certification, Hazmat Operations, Driver Operator I, and National Incident Management System ICS-100 and ICS-200 certifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

National Registry or State of Georgia Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-A) License are preferred.

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age;
  • Not have been convicted of a felony more than five (5) years but less than ten (10) years prior to employment may be certified and employed as a firefighter when the person has:

(a) Successfully completed a training program following the Georgia Fire Academy curriculum and sponsored by the Department of Offender Rehabilitation;

The Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council shall be the final authority with respect to authorizing employment and certification of a person who has been convicted of a felony more than five (5) years but less than ten (10) years prior to seeking employment as a firefighter for any municipal, city, or state fire department which employs three (3) or more firefighters who work a minimum of 40 hours per week and has the responsibility of preventing and suppressing fires, protecting life and property, and enforcing municipal, city, and state codes, as well as enforcing any law pertaining to the prevention and control of fires.

The Georgia Department of Public Health shall be the final authority with respect to Emergency Medical Service Licensure. Applicants will be required to complete a fingerprint background check and complete an online application process. Applicants must possess a current CPR Card and complete a verification of US residency.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 150 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, explosives, firearms, water hazards, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.

Description

General Description

This classification prevents, suppresses and extinguishes fires, to provide emergency medical treatment, and conduct other related firefighting activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Responds to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, explosions, bomb threats, downed power lines, and other emergency situations; responds to instructions from dispatcher; contacts appropriate related agencies as needed.
  • Provides protection of life and property; suppresses, controls and extinguishes fires; performs search, rescue, extrication of victims, and forcible entries; assists individuals from burning structures; establishes openings in buildings for entrance, ventilation, or salvage; ventilates smoke and gas from buildings; performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris; assists with cleanup activities; exercises control of emergency situations until relieved by a superior officer.
  • Responds to medical calls, providing basic life support treatment to patients as well as transportation to appropriate medical facilities; assesses the physical condition of patients and assists in making decisions regarding proper courses of action; performs such duties as CPR, splint applications, wound treatment, control of bleeding, shock prevention, monitoring and relaying of vital signs, oxygen administration, spine stabilization, etc.; performs extrication of victims from wreckage, as necessary.
  • Maintains a state of readiness/preparation for emergency response; checks/maintains stock of equipment and supplies on fire vehicles and in fire station; re-loads equipment and apparatus following response to emergency calls; assists in preparing apparatus for subsequent emergencies and in testing personal equipment, hoses/pumps, and other tools and apparatus; and ensures the emergency medical service equipment is properly stocked and operational.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures; maintains an awareness of new equipment, procedures, trends and advances in the profession; participates in physical fitness training, training drills and other continuing education activities; attends shift meetings, workshops and seminars as appropriate.
  • Participates in fire prevention, pre-fire planning and other fire education activities; conducts fire safety programs, apparatus displays and skills demonstrations; conducts tours of fire station and fire trucks; conducts safety inspections at schools and businesses; inspects hoses and hydrants; participates in community events and fund raisers.
  • Conducts general maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, buildings, quarters, apparatus, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting/testing equipment, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning quarters, or grounds maintenance; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment for necessary maintenance work.
  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives and reviews various documentation, including email, memos and standard operating procedures; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including maintenance forms, time sheets, and patient refusal forms; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.
