Description

Summary: Comptrollers manage the accounting staff and maintain a system of internal controls to ensure that funds are used appropriately. Directs financial activities of an organization by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

Responsibilities

Accounting Tasks

  • A comptroller is responsible for regular accounting tasks in the organization. These tasks include maintaining the payroll, handling accounts payable and receivable, preparing monthly income statements and updating the computerized accounting system. A comptroller also supervises periodic financial audits. If an external auditor does the audit, the comptroller collaborates with the auditor by providing the necessary documents required for the audit to be completed. It is also part of the financial controller job description to comply with local and federal tax filing requirements.

Planning

  • The comptroller provides concrete financial information for the organization to make its future decisions. He or she also provides the financial forecast and a budget for planning. Similarly, this information may be used by the organization to secure a loan. The comptroller will be responsible for financial forecasts as required by the organization (revenue forecasts, cashflow forecasts, etc.).

Monitoring Function

  • It is part of the comptroller job description to enhance the financial checks and controls to ensure integrity in financial reporting. He or she also monitors the cash flow within the organization. In addition, the holder of the position monitors the debit and credit and takes charge of the financial compliance functions to ensure compliance with the set financial transaction and reporting regulations. As part of the monitoring function, the comptroller may be required to formulate financial policies and procedures.

Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Establishes, or recommends to management, major corporate economic strategies, objectives, and policies for the company. Achieves budget objectives by scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  2. Recommends modifications to existing corporate programs.
  3. Handles accounts payable and receivable.
  4. Prepares reports which summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations.
  5. Directs preparation of budgets, reviews budget proposals, and prepares necessary supporting documentation and justification.
  6. Advises management about insurance coverage for protection against property losses and potential liabilities.
  7. Provides management with timely reviews of organization's financial status and progress in its various programs and activities.
  8. Directs determination of depreciation rates to apply to capital assets.
  9. Advises management on desirable operational adjustments due to tax code revisions.
  10. Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to external auditors. Supervises periodic financial audits. If an external auditor does the audit, the comptroller collaborates with the auditor by providing the necessary documents required for the audit to be completed
  11. Prepares reports required by regulatory agencies.
  12. Establishes relations with banks and other financial institutions.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

Managing processes, financial software, developing standards, auditing, accounting and corporate finance, tracking budget expenses, financial skills, analyzing information, developing budgets and performance management.

Education/Experience:

Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Math Ability:

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills:

Proficient with QuickBooks, Acumatica, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Oversees the Accounting Team, formalizes processes, and ensure all the Team members are meeting the financial objectives of the Organization. Establishes KPI to gauge the Team members performance.
