Description

Responsible for ensuring that all accounting activities are performed effectively and efficiently. Position provides leadership, training, and technical work direction to accounting analysts and associates. Position is responsible for the daily operations to ensure timely and accurate information for internal and external uses, according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Areas of responsibilities include, but are not limited to: month end close activities, financial reporting, audit support, variance analysis, balance sheet reconciliations, GAAP research, and related projects. Position is expected to serve as technical and subject matter expert, work with a high level of independence, and develop and/or improve business processes within the team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION:

  • Develop, train, advise, support and coach Accounting Associates.
  • Coordinates and directs the day-to-day accounting functions requiring application of GAAP to ensure proper accounting records and financial reporting.
  • Managers the month end accounting close process to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Monitors all financial activities, to ensure that all applicable laws, rules, regulations and controls of the company, the Mille Lacs Band, the Federal and State Tax Commissions, Detailed Gaming Regulations (DGRs) and the Gaming Commission are enforced throughout the businesses.
  • Review and approves journal entries, balance sheet account reconciliations and variance analysis reports.
  • Reviews the monthly financial statements and provides variance commentary where necessary.
  • Prepares and files informational tax returns and condensed financial statements for the Gaming Commission.
  • Ensures property controls are in place to protect and secure company assets
  • Establish and create standard operating procedures and MLCV policies where needed.
  • Evaluates and improves current processes and controls to improve efficiencies and effectiveness.
  • Implements, maintains and reviews various business processes within Workday or other financial systems to ensure efficient processing of data and maximizing the use of automated systems.
  • Responsible for review and accuracy of eliminations of inter-company transactions for the presentation of consolidated financial reporting.
  • Acts as a liaison to all other departments with respect to financial questions.
  • Ensures a maximum level of company-wide accounting service and satisfaction is achieved and maintained.
  • Facilitates the flow of information throughout the property, by organizing and presiding over regularly scheduled meetings with all Associates under his/her span of control.
  • Held accountable, to a very high degree, for the accuracy and thoroughness of departmental records and reports.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective communication with our external auditors and provides reports and reconciliations as necessary to ensure a timely and accurate annual audit.
 
Position Requirements

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

  • Directly supervises the activities of the Accounts Receivable, Cash Management, Asset Management, and General Ledger Accounting Divisions of the Finance Department.
  • Tracks Associate performance for recognition programs to improve departmental performance.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training Associates; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining Associates; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited school required.
  • Work experience must show a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in an accounting department with a minimum of three (3) years working in a supervisory management position with direct reports.
  • CPA certification is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP and/or GASB, including financial statement preparation and disclosure requirements.
  • Workday experience preferred.
  • Public accounting experience preferred.
  • MBA preferred.
