Title

RF Microwave Design Engineer

Category Engineering
Description

The Sensors Division focuses on technology development for advanced sensor systems, particularly in the areas of airborne/surface-based radar, electronic warfare, underwater acoustics, hyperspectral imaging and EO/IR sensing. Within this role, we perform work at full system prototypes, experiment campaigns and technology component development. Particular development roles within the Sensors Division include RF analog/digital hardware, acoustic hardware, signal processing algorithms, machine learning algorithms, tracking/fusion, as well as real-time embedded processor implementation.

STR is hiring a RF Microwave Design Engineer with skills and experience to lead and contribute to projects in radar, electronic warfare and communications domains. Applicable projects span all levels of maturity from initial concept generation through design, prototype, development, test, and transition to production. The RF Engineer will analyze high-level system requirements, as well as perform practical design, simulation, prototyping, fabrication, integration, and testing of RF and microwave systems and components. The RF Engineer will also design custom microwave circuits and PCBAs and integrate these into systems and subsystems. Duties will require leading and participating in small multi-disciplinary teams and working collaboratively on a variety of challenging tasks.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Designing Radar, EW, and Comms RF architectures
  • Collaborating with system engineers to develop and document RF/Microwave hardware requirements
  • Developing and analyzing Microwave and RF system architectures including frequency planning, system link budget analysis, cascade analysis, spur analysis, phase noise, gain, IP2/IP3, and noise figure performance
  • Performing trade studies, modeling, simulation, and other forms of analysis to predict component and subsystem performance.
  • Developing test plans and performing design verification in the lab
  • Designing and evaluating complex multi-chip PCBA designs across the RF spectrum, from DC to 40GHz
  • Analyzing Microwave and RF designs using electromagnetic simulation tools such as MWO, ADS, HFSS, CST, or other design and simulation tools
  • Overseeing microwave and RF design from requirements to implementation in a dynamic environment
  • Mentoring junior engineers and technicians

Position Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a Security Clearance
  • BS in Electrical Engineering (or closely related field, advanced degree preferred)
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Expertise in RF systems, including receiver, transmitter and antenna design
  • Hands on experience with microwave measurements including spectrum analyzers, Real-time Spectrum Analyzers (RSAs), Vector Network Analyzers (VNAs) and Performance Network Analyzer (PNAs)
  • RF/Microwave experience including analysis and design of sub-components and circuits
  • Design experience with microwave submodules such as MMICs, combiners, dividers, low-noise amplifiers, pre-selectors, filter banks, mixers, Phased-Locked-Loops (PLLs), and Local Oscillators (LOs)
  • Ability to work within a cross functional team in a dynamic environment

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active Security Clearance at the Secret or Top Secret (TS) level
  • Understanding of emerging, state-of-the-art technologies that drive RF performance
  • Expertise in RF cascade analysis, systems analysis, and design & simulation tools such as MWO, ADS, HFSS, CST, or similar
  • Expertise in RF component design
  • Expertise in 3D simulation of electrical interconnects and transmission lines
  • Experience with phased array design
