Grounds Laborer (Temporary) 

Description

This is your opportunity to join Woodland Park Zoo as a Grounds Laborer with the Facilities Team! There are five temporary, part-time, non-benefited positions available.

What you’ll do:

  • Create an inviting space for guests and employees through:
  • Routine custodial work in public restrooms and other guest or staff areas. This includes cleaning toilets and related spills. Proper personal protective equipment will be provided.
  • Indoor and/or outdoor litter control and cleaning tasks.
  • Picking up trash, sweeping floors, dusting, washing walls and windows, disinfecting, vacuuming, cleaning light fixtures, and other tasks to keep areas clean.
  • Cleaning, waxing, polishing floors, and operating hand-held scrubbers or polishers.
  • Sweeping outside areas and sidewalks.
  • Perform routine manual work in a variety of indoor and outdoor work areas.
  • Provide manual assistance to other workers and use various types of hand and small power tools such as hammer, saws, axes, drills, seedeaters, backpack blowers, and shovels.
  • Perform minor adjustments, basic maintenance, and repairs to various types of hand and small power equipment.
  • Set out flares, traffic control devices and provides work site protection, as directed.
  • Manually dig trenches, fence post holes, and other holes using hand tools.
  • Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of chain link fences, backstops, benches, signs and bleachers.
  • Load and unload materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Drive pickup trucks, sedans, and other small motorized vehicles in connection with manual work activities.
  • Assist in set-ups, room arrangements, and office relocations such as in the set up and removal of chairs, risers, portable turnstiles, and flooring.

When we’ll need you:

  • This is a full-time opportunity and your work schedule will be determined with your supervisor.
  • Shifts begin as early as 5:30am and may go as late 10:30pm.
  • The zoo is open seven days a week and shifts may include weekends and holidays.

What you bring:

  • Strong work ethic.
  • Willing to take direction and perform detail oriented, occasionally repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision and collaborate/work together with the team.
  • A valid WA driver’s license and a safe driving history.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating or maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. You'll also need to be able to write routine reports.
  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and computing rate, ratio, or percent.

Physical demands and work environment for this position:

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform essential functions.
  • Regularly lift or move up to 35 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds.
  • This role requires a considerable amount of walking zoo grounds and standing. Kneeling, crouching, or crawling are frequently required to perform tasks.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, typical office environments, and noise from guests.
  • Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions; work near moving mechanical parts; work in high or precarious places; biohazardous bodily wastes; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; vibration; and risk of electrical shock.

Pay: $21.72 per hour

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a valid WA driver's license. A criminal background check, driving record review, and pre-employment physical will be required of the selected applicant(s).
