We are seeking a Naval Architect (Mid-Level) to join our team in Boston, MA. The ideal candidate will:

  • Serve as the lead technical authority for reviewing/answering LARs processed and approved by the Planning Yard and travels for design craft checks when necessary (ACU-1, ACU-2 and NBU-7).
  • Provide technical guidance and documentation for craft changes, including installation drawings, TM updates, and ATPs. (Assignments may require the development of improvements to current designs, techniques and procedures and/or innovative approaches)
  • Develop change records (BoatAlts) for craft improvements and safety issues. Provide technical and design support on emergent issues in the Fleet and during all availabilities. Respond to emergent Fleet Life Cycle support and engineering issues as a result of SEIPT meetings for items related to action items/studies.
  • Apply naval architectural knowledge in accordance with applicable U.S. Navy or American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more of the following technical areas:
    • Hull form and hydrodynamic performance, including development of hull form geometry and lines plans, hydrostatics and curves of form, resistance and powering estimates, propulsor design and performance including waterjet propulsion, appendage design, maneuvering analyses, seakeeping analyses, development of model test plans and observing and analyzing data from model tests or full scale trials.
    • Weight and stability analyses, including dynamic stability, development of weight and center of gravity estimates, performance of intact and damaged stability analyses, performance of deadweight surveys and inclining experiments.
    • Concept and feasibility design studies addressing whole ship sizing and performance analyses, requirements validation, and design optimization;
    • Design integration, coordinating inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines, such as marine engineering and structures, into balanced, closed solution designs to establish principal characteristics and design features such as length, beam, depth, draft, displacement, speed, and other performance parameters.
    • Structural design, developing hull girder bending moments and structural configurations and scantlings in accordance with appropriate rules or design standards, development of superstructure, mast, and local support structure to withstand primary and secondary loads.
    • General arrangements and configuration, developing requirements for area and volume, preparing overall ship arrangement concepts and drawings illustrating primary functional allocation of spaces within the ship considering location and adjacency constraints, performing special studies including access and line of sight analyses, assisting in detailed layouts of individual compartments such as living and berthing spaces, ship support spaces, storerooms, and shops.
 
Position Requirements

Required Education, Skills, Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering from an accredited institutition.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Expertise in naval architecture standards, practices, and tools.
  • Ability to apply regulatory body rules, ship specifications, and other technical guidance to develop conforming designs and modifications to ships and craft. Experience should include familiarity with and use of U.S. Navy and Military Specifications related to ship design,
  • Demonstrated ability in most or all of the following areas: structures, hydrodynamics, weights and stability, speed and powering, hull form design, arrangements, manning, vibration, damage control, survivability, machinery.
  • Experience developing ship structural drawings including familiarity with 2-D and 3-D CAD software and the common Naval Architecture design software programs, preferred.
  • Finite elements modeling and simulation experience and familiarity with finite element software systems, preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Confidential security clearance.
