Academic Resource Specialist (High School Counselor)

Position Summary
This is a 5/5 (100% FTE) position, with occasional weekend and summer hours.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Model for students the characteristics of a Lasallian/Vincentian educator;

  • Support SHC’s mission, philosophy and Integral Student Outcomes;

  • Within SHC’s college preparatory framework, facilitate learning for students with mild to moderate learning differences, supporting their academic achievement and social emotional learning:

    • Provide direct and consultative academic support services for students with special needs within their learning diagnosis;

    • Assists students in developing resiliency, self-advocacy, time management, study strategies, and communication skills.

  • Work collaboratively with SHC teachers, administrators, and parents/guardians to implement strategies to support students with diagnosed learning differences:

    • Determine appropriate accommodations and help coordinate those;

    • Interpret a variety of assessment and diagnostic instruments at admissions and during students’ high school careers;

    • Determine appropropriate accommodations and help coordinate those with students, faculty, families, and outside professionals when appropriate;

    • Assist classroom teachers with implementation of instructional strategies, appropriate accommodations and modifications to meet varied needs of students;

  • Preliminarily evaluate teacher and fellow counselor referrals for students who may exhibit signs of undiagnosed learning issues. When appropriate, provide an initial screening for learning issues and refer families for further evaluation;

  • Collaborate toward the achievement of the SHC Counseling and Advising goals and curriculum:

    • Conduct a minimum of one individual counseling session with each counselee per term;

    • Regularly meet each class of counselees in counseling groups as scheduled by the program to cover segments of the counseling curriculum

    • Establish and maintain groups for each class of counselees to communicate general information and answer questions on the school’s learning management system;

  • Meet with students, their families, and teachers, to support student learning and to ensure successful navigation of the SHC curriculum to meet SHC graduation requirements;

  • Respond to concerns noted by teachers, parents, or administrators about counselees in a timely fashion;

  • Monitor students’ grades and follow up with students, teachers, and parents to address deficiencies in a timely manner;

  • Document all contacts with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and other personnel in the school’s student information system;

  • Serve as the liaison between home and school to minimize disruption in course completion for counselees who are absent from school for significant periods of time;

  • Assist in the administration of standardized testing, particularly for students with extended time or verbal testing accommodations;

  • Collaborate on periodic presentations or duties outside the school schedule;

  • Research and promulgate best practices, resources, and assistive technologies to facilitate learning;

  • Maintain highest standards of confidentiality.

Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in School Counseling (or the equivalent);

  • Experience working with students with learning differences;

  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote student learning.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in a Catholic college preparatory high school;

  • Experience as a school counselor.

Pupil Personnel Services Credential; or

California Education Specialist Instruction Credential, Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe; or

Education Specialist Instruction (M/M or M/S) Intern Eligibility through an accredited University/County education program and continued enrollment in that program.

Education and/or Experience:

Master’s Degree in School Counseling (or equivalent)
