Purpose of Division:

Finance is a department under the Office of the CFO and is supervised by the Senior Vice President, Controller. Its mission is to provide dependable, responsive financial services and accurate financial information in a customer-oriented and efficient manner. In doing so, our board of directors, along with internal and external customers and members of the NeighborWorks network, are satisfied knowing that the assets and resources entrusted to us by federal taxpayers and numerous supporters in the private sector are properly safeguarded.

Position Summary:

As a member of the Finance team of NeighborWorks America the Sr. Payroll accountant will work very closely with Sr. Manager, Payroll to assist developing and implementing payroll strategies. Also, this position will apply principles of accounting to observe, examine and investigate past and present financial operations within the payroll and time management areas, according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”) and regulatory requirements. Estimates future expenditures, especially payroll-related, and proposes budgets for such expenses.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes, reconciles and maintains general ledger accounts and other financial records on a monthly basis in preparation for the quarterly reports and annual external audit.
  • Ensure accuracy of all payroll, including conciliating W2's.
  • Analyzes transactions within financial systems (including general ledger, payroll, loan portfolio and/or time and expense application) to determine need system enhancements or adjustments in account structure.
  • Prepares General Ledger account analyses for various general ledger accounts including variance analysis (discussing differences in amounts, and rationale of changes) between periods.
  • Prepares journal entries, based on reconciliations and analysis, to ensure proper recording of financial transactions on a timely manner.
  • Coordinate corporate wide time allocation processes, including reporting, system support, analysis and staff communications.
  • Forensic analysis of all time and payroll transactions, on a periodic basis, for inappropriate or unusual activity, reporting usual findings to the Senior Payroll Manager or Controller
  • Prepares and/or reviews the accuracy of payroll related journal entries and performs account reconciliation and analysis while ensuring supporting documentation is accurate.
  • Coordinator of all company-wide loan payroll processes, including reporting, support, analysis and staff communication
  • Analyze employee time information and calculating appropriate pay amounts
  • Analyze and reconciliation of payroll tax liability ledger accounts, leading to preparation of monthly activity analysis, including variation analysis and explanations for changes between periods
  • Projection and analysis of company compensation schedules, including preparation of payroll forecasting reports, budget to actual analysis reports and suggesting revision in payroll budget estimates (based on analysis).
  • Process bi-weekly payroll.
  • Assists with technical responses to inquiries from employees, network organizations and auditors regarding payroll and cash receipts
  • Reviews and analyzes 401K reports to prepare corporate Annual Return retirement audit/Report of Employee Benefit Plan in compliance with federal tax regulations. Submits return for review by management. Supervises the timely filing of the return.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
(a) Education: A college degree from an accredited four year college or university, preferably with a major course work in Accounting or ten years of experience in the field of Finance and Accounting or an equal combination of education and experience

(b) Licenses, Certifications: CPP certification, preferred.

(c) Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Excellent verbal and written skills are required

(e) Technology: MS Office products proficiency required. Familiarity with Ultimate Software payroll and time management applications.

Working Conditions:
(a) Travel: up to 10%
(b) Physical/Sensory Demands: Fast paced working environment, extensive computer usage.
