Position Environmental Manager  
Description

The Landings Association (TLA) is seeking an experienced Environmental Manager to oversee all programs and projects related to environmental management at The Landings including lagoon maintenance, tree management, landscape management, and wildlife management.

This position reports to the Director of Public Works, and is an integral member of TLA’s management team, providing staff recommendations and project updates to the Board of Directors and other Board Committees as needed. The position requires the ability to be on-call in emergency situations.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Provides leadership and sets objectives for the Association in all areas related to environmental management.
  • Manages contracts for wildlife management and landscaping, including issuing work orders and requisitions, preparing specifications for annual and specific contracts, evaluating resulting bids, and recommending final selection.
  • Monitors and maintains lagoon water levels, analyzes lagoon water quality, and recommends treatment as needed.
  • Maintains and determines needs for improvement to aeration systems.
  • Processes regulatory permits to ensure compliance with laws, including underground storage tanks (tier 2, hazmat, line tightness testing, S.P.C.C.), state and federal dredging permits, and marshland protection permits.

Position Requirements

Key Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behavioral Characteristics Needed

  • Excellent customer service orientation, with strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong team player with ability to build and encourage mutually beneficial relationships at every level.
  • Ability to develop and implement vehicle and equipment preventative maintenance programs.
  • Intermediate level of knowledge and skill of the following: herbicide spray equipment, chainsaw, pole saw, boat/motor/trailer operation, backhoe loader, bucket truck, tractor, bobcat, and street sweeper.
  • Working knowledge of fish life, aquatic plant growth, and the biological composition of water.
  • Knowledge of algaecides, herbicides, and other chemicals used to maintain water quality.
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices with regard to chemicals, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations for pesticide applications and fuel permitting.
  • Ability to identify trees and shrubbery and determine their health.
  • Knowledge of birds, fish, deer, and other coastal wildlife.
  • Knowledge of urban forestry practices, including the preservation of old-growth maritime forests.
  • High degree of initiative with ability to work independently and resolve routine matters.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with demonstrated ability to make presentations and speak effectively in front of groups.
  • Excellent leadership skills, with demonstrated ability to coach and develop staff.

Minimum Job requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Environmental Science or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of applicable work experience with one year of supervisory experience.
  • Must have a Georgia Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicators License with Category 26 Aquatic Pest Control, or the ability to obtain within three months.
  • Class A or B UST operator certification desired.
  • Ability to be on call in emergency situations, specifically related to hurricane/tropical storm or natural disasters.

This position requires an excellent leader with at least three years of demonstrated experience in effectively coaching and developing staff. Strong organizational and project management skills are a must, with excellent attention to detail and ability to multi-task and meet commitments. Excellent interpersonal skills are required, with the demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with staff and residents and resolve conflict constructively. Must have strong oral and written communication skills, with experience in preparing and providing effective presentations.
