POSITION SUMMARY: BASIC FUNCTION

The Electrical Engineer, Technical Operations works on the Data Center Technical Operations team to support the operation of a portfolio of large, technically complex data center facilities. The ideal candidate is an experienced electrical engineer with exposure to the design and operation of electrical infrastructure in an industrial setting. This person should possess excellent communications skills and be able to work well with a diverse interdisciplinary team focused on creating and maintaining the best data center environments possible.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical support on the critical electrical infrastructure for the Data Center Facility Operations team.
  • Collaborate closely with outsourced Engineers and other consultants on electrical infrastructure repair and improvement projects
  • Provide engineering support for sales opportunities and customer projects
  • Troubleshoot problems and conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective Action (CA) for problems affecting system performance and efficiency
  • Review critical equipment installation, upgrade, maintenance, repair and overhaul procedures
  • Suggests system re-design where appropriate for system upgrades or design refinement
  • Provides incident management support, system operational guidance, engineering policies and procedures, maintenance support, and equipment troubleshooting
  • Work with local authorities having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes
  • Participate in factory witness testing of new equipment
  • Assist engineers and commissioning agents to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical and building systems
  • Assist with identifying equipment end-of-life and obsolescence for capital project budgeting
  • Assist with the performance of engineering calculations and studies
  • Monitor and evaluate load distribution and failover loading
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of electrical equipment
  • Conduct product, systems, and material research

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • In-depth knowledge of industrial electrical and power distribution systems
  • Knowledge of NFPA 72 (NEC), NFPA 70E, and other related electrical codes and standards
  • Knowledge of Life Safety, IBC and OSHA codes and standards
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and electrical engineering software
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to self-organize, set priorities to meet deadlines and budgets
  • Ability to work in a process-driven, high criticality environment

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years of direct experience with the design, operation, or maintenance of industrial facilities
  • Direct experience with design, operation, or maintenance of data centers is highly desired
  • Experience with large scale technical operations
  • Experience with vendor negotiation and management desired

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primarily sitting with some walking, standing, and bending.
  • Able to hear and speak into a telephone.
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any required computer keyboard, mouse, and other technical instruments
  • Requires ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds

 

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Typical office environment with extensive daily usage of a computer.
  • Occasional field work in electrical and mechanical infrastructure rooms, data floor spaces, rooftops and construction sites
  • Data center environment with loud noises and changing temperatures

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Travel required up to 25% of the time
  • Must possess a current, valid state-issued driver’s license
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations at the data center
  • Carry a cell phone to be available in emergency situations
  • Ability and willingness to respond after hours in the event of an emergency, and at times during extended hours
