Title

RF Microwave Design Engineer

Category Engineering
Description

The Sensors Division focuses on technology development for advanced sensor systems, particularly in the areas of airborne/surface-based radar, electronic warfare, underwater acoustics, hyperspectral imaging and EO/IR sensing. Within this role, we perform work at full system prototypes, experiment campaigns and technology component development. Particular development roles include RF analog/digital hardware, acoustic hardware, signal processing algorithms, machine learning algorithms, tracking/fusion, as well as real-time embedded processor implementation.

STR is hiring a RF Microwave Design Engineer who will be involved from the initial concept through design, prototype, development, test, and transition to production. The RF Engineer will design custom microwave circuits, custom PCBAs, and integrate with existing elements into systems and subsystems. The RF Engineer will also analyze high level system requirements and perform the design, simulation, prototyping, fabrication, integration, and testing of advanced RF and microwave systems and components. Additional duties include participating in a small multi-disciplinary team working together on a variety of challenging tasks.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Building Radar, EW, and Comms RF architectures.
  • Engaging with system engineers to develop and document RF/Microwave hardware requirements
  • Developing and analyzing Microwave and RF system architectures including frequency planning, system link budget analysis, cascade analysis, spur analysis, phase noise, gain, IP2/IP3, and noise figure performance
  • Performing trade studies, modeling, simulation, and other forms of analysis to predict component and subsystem performance.
  • Designing and evaluating complex multi-chip PCBA designs from DC to 40GHz
  • Analyzing Microwave and RF designs using electromagnetic simulation tools such as MWO, ADS, HFSS, CST or other design and simulation tools
  • Designing frequency conversion, amplifier design, and analog filter design, interfacing to antennas and phased arrays
  • Developing test plans and performing design verification in the lab
  • Owning the Microwave and RF design from requirements to implementation in a dynamic environment
  • Mentoring junior engineers and technicians

Position Requirements

Required Skills:

  • US Citizen with the ability to obtain a Security Clearance
  • BS in Electrical Engineering (advanced degree preferred)
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • RF/Microwave design experience to include analysis and design of components and circuits from DC to 40GHz
  • Expertise in RF cascade analysis and systems analysis
  • Expertise in design and simulation tools such as MWO, ADS, HFSS, CST, or similar
  • Experience with microwave submodules such as MMIC’s, combiners, dividers, low-noise amplifiers, pre-selectors, filter banks, mixers, Phased-locked-loops (PLLs), and Local Oscillators (LOs)
  • Experience with RF component design
  • Experience with 3D simulation of electrical interconnects and transmission lines
  • Hands on experience with microwave measurements including using spectrum analyzers, Real-time Spectrum Analyzers (RSAs), Vector Network Analyzers (VNAs) and Performance Network Analyzer (PNAs)
  • Knowledge of receiver and transmitter design
  • Understanding of state of the art technologies that drive RF performance
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work cross functional team in a dynamic environment

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with antenna design
  • Experience with phased array design
