CAT III Linguists shall provide interpretation and translation services as required by the supported forces. Linguists will be required to transcribe and/or translate source material, both printed and audio; provide analysis and reporting of translated foreign language source material. Typically works as part of, or may lead a team of, linguists supporting CONUS operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Uzbek Linguist (CAT III) shall have the capability to:

  • Provide foreign language support services, including transcription, translation, and interpretation services (comprising written idiomatic translations of non-technical voice and graphic materials using correct syntax and expression from English to the target language(s) or vice versa) in support of operational missions;
  • Provide any and all cultural and ethnic context of translations, interpretations, and transcriptions with an expert linguist’s opinion given to the supported organization or agency as to the most likely meaning/intent of terms, phrases, or statements that may have multiple valid interpretations;
  • Supplement interpretations and translations with information pertinent and specific to professional fields such as medicine, scientific, engineering, legal, etc., and identify and extract information components meeting military information requirement list criteria;
  • Provide input to and draft product reports;
  • Provide quality control of junior linguist transcribed and translated material;
  • Perform accurate consecutive interpretation;
  • Live and work in harsh environments, to include temporary facilities as the mission dictates;
  • Serve in a combat zone, and previous SOF experience is desirable;
  • Function effectively and efficiently during extended periods of high pressure and stress as required by SOF;
  • Function as an integral member of a team of highly trained professionals responsible for the safety and security of U.S. Forces, U.S. and foreign dignitaries, and facilities/resources;
  • Frequently travel Worldwide with minimal oversight and guidance to third country sensitive meetings;
  • Travel in support of signature reduction activities, the ability to coordinate travel, and work with sensitive operational elements in support of operational meetings;
  • Produce operational reports and other specialized documents in conjunction with operational element;
  • Effectively work in cross cultural, religious and ethnic divides
Position Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Native proficiency preferred, not required
  • Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level 3/3 (Listening/Reading) in both the target language and English
  • Able to understand the essentials of all speech in a standard dialect and to follow accurately the essentials of conversations between educated native speakers, understand radio broadcasts, news stories similar to wire service reports, oral reports, some oral technical reports and public addresses on non-technical subjects
  • Able to produce idiomatic translations of non-technical material using correct syntax and expression from English to target language and vice versa, with the meaning and intent of the original source preserved


Computer Skills

  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office Suite


Security Clearance

  • Top Secret with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) and CI polygraph, or interim TS clearance with interim access to SCI*
