Medical Director/Psychiatric Medicine

The position is responsible for overseeing, through a combination of direct and consultative support, the medical and clinical services provided by the VA REACH program. Consultative after hours and weekend hours may be needed. (Contract position of 8 -12 hours per week)

REACH is a crisis prevention, intervention and stabilization system to support individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, as well as a mental health condition or challenging behavior that is negatively affecting their quality of life. REACH provides consultation, prevention, development of crisis education & prevention plans, community based mobile support and crisis therapeutic home services.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for providing medical direction, guidance and training to REACH Mobile Response Teams and Crisis Therapeutic Home staff.
  • Works closely with the REACH Director and Clinical Director for operational and clinical direction of the program.
  • Collaborates with the Director, Clinical Director, Team Leads, Residential Program Manager, and nursing staff on the clinical needs and services provided to individuals and systems supported by REACH.
  • Participates in weekly team meetings with REACH staff.
  • Provides medical consultation/advice in the development of community trainings.
  • Works closely with the nursing staff regarding review of guest/client medications and medical/psychiatric symptoms and any warranted modifications.
  • Works closely with Director, Clinical Director, Team Leads, Residential Program Manager, and nursing staff in recognizing and addressing additional and ongoing staff training needs.
  • Establishes and maintains community linkages to improve crisis prevention and intervention in the communities with in the region.
  • Serves as a liaison to community medical providers, including private and CSB employed psychiatrists, state operated facilities, hospitals, and other providers.
  • Provides training and support needs of the community partners to increase the community’s ability to support individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities and co-occurring mental illness and behavioral health needs.
  • Provides medical guidance and medication review for guests residing in the residential facilities. Inclusive of a weekly on-site or consultation via telemedicine.
  • Reviews data and completion of documentation required by local, state, and federal regulations for clinical and service trends.
  • Provides comprehensive clinical evaluations, assessments and treatment by providing medical/health screening, psychiatric evaluation/assessment.
  • Diagnoses psychiatric disorders using criteria delineated in the DSM- V and DM-ID II.
Position Requirements
  • Board certification as a psychiatrist, neurologist and/or developmental pediatrician or nurse practitioner.
  • Current, unrestricted license to practice as a physician in the Commonwealth of Virginia; preferred.
  • Experience in intellectual/developmental disabilities, including medical/psychiatric care for individuals with significant behavioral needs.
  • Current, unrestricted DEA license/authorization to prescribe medications/controlled substances.
  • Experience with training/educating others on clinical/medical needs of individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
  • Must demonstrate capacity to effectively communicate verbally and in written form.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted, state appropriate driver’s license.
