Duties and Responsibilities

• Write and speak clearly and coherently in the Target Language and English;
• Translate or interpret conversations;
• Maintain the integrity and meaning of the material through translations;
• Translate general and technical material to and from a Target Language and English;
• Possess a thorough understanding of IC transliteration guidelines and directives;
• Quickly scan and accurately translate a large amount of material;
• Provide quality translations in the time allotted;
• Read a variety of unfamiliar subjects, relate ideas and make inferences, and accurately interpret the intent of the writer;
• Converse professionally in formal and informal situations, resolve problems, work with unfamiliar topics, provide explanations, offer supported opinions and hypothesize;


Essential Responsibilities

  • Conducting periodic reviews and evaluations of translated documents;
  • Providing comments, corrections and recommendations for translated material;
  • Delegating tasks according to a linguist’s knowledge and abilities;
  • Clarifying expectations of tasks for supported linguists;
  • Communicating effectively and readily sharing knowledge with others;
  • Developing appropriate training aids for continuous output improvement;
  • Identifying areas of weakness and providing solutions for improvement;
  • Identifying training opportunities and requirements;
  • Identifying needed resources to improve operational capabilities;
  • Acting as a representative at training opportunities, forums, and Linguist/Translation Working Groups, thus playing an active role in the IC to understand and incorporate IC language and transliteration standards into client's practices and operations.

Position Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Possess a strong sensitivity to sociolinguistic and cultural references, as well as be a well-educated native listener and speaker;
  • Read all styles and forms whether printed or in reasonably legible handwriting;
  • Read between the lines, follow unpredictable turns of thought and offer reasoned analysis;
  • Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level 4/4 (Listening/Reading) in the target language
  • Advanced language skills in English
  • Write in a variety of prose styles about varied topics with rare errors;
  • Tailor language to fit an audience, persuade, debate and represent a point of view;


Computer Skills

  • Be proficient in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Power Point) and using a computer and related devices,
  • Familiarity with Computer Assisted Translation Tools, such as Translation Memory, Terminology Management Databases, and/or on-line dictionaries.
