Description

We are seeking a Senior System Administrator with excellent skills in HPUX and at least one other Unix platform to join our Managed Services Practice. This experience must include managing servers running the HPUX and other Unix operating systems in high availability 24x7 production environments. As a member of this practice, you will communicate and consult with our client's business and technical personnel, blending with their IT team and working together to help identify potential problems and develop solutions.

Candidate should be highly experienced with HPUX administration and architecture. This position will focus on System Administration expertise for operating system, storage and backup support of our clients' systems. Candidates must have experience with server implementations, upgrades and administration, performance tuning, backups/recoveries and server monitoring.

As much as this is a highly technical position, communication skills are of equal importance and the candidate may be required occasionally to act as a Service Delivery Manager for certain clients. Candidate must have strong experience interacting via emails and voice with clients and IT Managers. They must also possess the ability to craft documentation for the US marketplace, present technical topics to upper IT management in an engaging and effective manner, and work with global overseas resources.

Preferred location is Chicago area, but for the right candidate, virtual office is an option.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with team members and clients by responding to ticket requests to complete services identified in Service Orders
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and remediate issues
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to clients to ensure best practices are followed for: architecture, performance, capacity, and monitoring
  • Assist with deployment of monitoring and management toolsets
  • Work with a variety of clients and supporting different technologies and solutions
  • Act as Service Delivery Manager for a set of clients
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert in assisting sale teams to close deals
  • Work with Managed Service team members to continue to fine tune solution offering
  • Act as a presales resource when needed
  • Work with vendors and OEM for escalations

 
Position Requirements

Required

The successful person for this role will be highly experienced in Server, Storage and Backup administration. They should have experience in some combination of the following specific skillsets:

  • HPUX system administration experience (10+ years) with production administration experience in a high-availability, multi-site, 24x7 environment
    • Solid experience with HPUX OS installs and upgrades
    • Troubleshooting experience with HPUX hardware
  • Solid experience with any of the Linux, Solaris or IBM virtualization technologies
    • This should include one of the following: HPUX ServiceGuard, RedHat Cluster, Veritas Cluster, IBM LPAR management, or Solaris Zones
  • Installing and administrating Linux servers in AWS or Oracle Cloud
  • Strong ability to interpret and craft Unix scripts (KSH, BASH, C Shell or Perl), following algorithm logic and scripting best practices
  • Experience with configuring Linux or one of the other OSs with LDAP/Active Directory
  • Solid SAN experience with HP Storage arrays like HP 3Par.
    • Experience with EMC, IBM XIV, and/or Netapp would be an additional positive.
  • Solid backup technology experience.
    • Backup technologies experience with HP StoreOnce, EMC Avamar and DataDomain, Veeam or CommVault are all positives.
  • Excellent communication skills are a must! Due to the amount of client interaction required daily, candidates must have the ability to effectively and efficiently communicate in emails, craft multi-page documentation, and speak fluent English on the phone.
  • Ability to work independently with strong time-management skills and personal accountability to complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Ability to work within a rotating, on-call weekly schedule
  • Based on client need, after-hours and weekend work may occasionally be required

Positives:

  • Experience with Nagios, and scripting associated with plugin development
  • Experience with using ServiceNow and ITL Framework
  • Previous MSP experience
  • Experience with any of these clouds: Azure, Oracle Cloud, Google Cloud, and/or AWS
