The Heavy Equipment Mechanic I position is a Non-Exempt position with a hring range of $17.77 - $22.21 hourly.

General Purpose:

Perform repairs and maintenance work necessary to maintain County Road and Bridge Department vehicles and equipment in good condition and respond to calls during off hours as required.

Essential Functions:

Heavy Equipment Mechanic I

Under close supervision, performs the following essential functions:

  1. Performs routine tune ups on equipment as directed. Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs.
  2. Performs safety inspections on equipment.
  3. Transports operators to or from equipment in the field. Transports parts and makes minor repairs on defective equipment in the field.
  4. Maintains and submits equipment repair and maintenance records.
  5. Performs essential functions of Equipment Operator II as required.
  6. Assists Motor Pool Mechanic with maintenance and repair when additional labor is needed.
  7. Reviews all work products to ensure highest level of quality.
  8. Drives vehicle to perform one or more essential functions.
  9. Performs other duties of a similar or related level as necessary or assigned.

Job Qualifications:

Heavy Equipment Mechanic I & II

Knowledge of:

  1. Automotive maintenance and repair techniques typically gained through a course of study at a trade school in heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  2. Proper use of hand and mechanical tools of the trade.
  3. Gasoline and diesel engines.
  4. Safe operation of various types of heavy and light construction and maintenance equipment.
  5. Road construction and maintenance materials and methods.
  6. Basic techniques of radio communication.
  7. Relevant computer hardware and software applications.
  8. Basic arithmetic functions (add, subtract, multiply and divide).

Ability to:

  1. Speak, read and write the English language.
  2. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  3. Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  4. Pass required D.O.T. physical and drug screening test.
  5. Drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.
  6. Use a variety of hand and power tools.
  7. Understand and practice safety procedures and precautions.
  8. Work nights and weekends as directed by Supervisor.
  9. Perform strenuous physical labor for long periods of time.
  10. Drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.

  12. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is often exposed to outdoor weather conditions that may vary from extreme heat to extreme cold; and to construction equipment and debris, fumes, odors, airborne particles and dust. High School diploma or equivalent. Trade-school-level training in diesel engines, gas engines, transmissions and welding.
