General Summary

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will support and oversee the design and development of new and ongoing DOD Training and Simulation Industry devices. Perform engineering analyses linear and non-linear such as stress and frequency. Assist in producing detailed engineering and assembly drawings for manufacturing. Travel to support site surveys and installations at varying military bases.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops mechanical and electromechanical designs per customer and project requirements.
  • Defines, generates and reviews project requirements.
  • Evaluates Statements of Work, develops a design and takes it from concept stage to LRIP and eventually full production while meeting project requirements.
  • Evaluates mechanical and electro-mechanical systems and products by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and materials.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively and efficiently with cross-functional teams on design direction and requirements in order to achieve project goals.
  • Works with other engineering disciplines and IPT’s to provide technical support and oversight of mechanical issues during all phases of development to production.
  • Specifies and qualifies mechanical and electro-mechanical components.
  • Responsible for selecting proper materials and finishes to meet program requirements.
  • Support project reviews such as PDR and CDR.
  • Support change board drawing release processes.
  • Interfaces with vendors and subcontractors to answer technical questions and solve issues.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor when interfacing with customers directly either on site or remotely.
  • Create 3D CAD designs and drawings using Solidworks.
  • Performs analyses using SolidWorks Simulation.
  • Configuration control of documents using Solidworks PDM.
  • Works to and meets Department of Defense (DOD) and ASME standards.
  • Assist, support and guide Entry and Junior level mechanical engineers.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Qualifications

  • Fluent in parametric 3D CAD modeling and drafting using SolidWorks 2019.
  • Experience adhering to ASME Y14.100 and ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Knowledge of AWS standards and weld callouts.
  • Mechanical knowledge of materials and their properties.
  • Experienced in taking a product design from concept to production.
  • Experience with sheet metal design, weldments and surfacing.
  • Experience in designing to meet Environmental requirements such as shock, vibration, thermal, humidity, altitude, salt/fog, etc per MIL-STD-810.
  • Experience designing to meet Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) requirements.
  • Experienced with rapid prototyping and 3D printing technology.
  • Experience with DOD and Military processes and procedures.
  • Thorough understanding of standard Engineering Change Order processes.
  • Hands-on on-site experience fabricating and installing training and simulation equipment.
  • 7+ years of experience of hands on mechanical design engineering experience.
  • Must be a US citizen.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or related field from four-year University is required.
  • 7+ years’ experience in complex part and assembly design.
  • 7+ years’ experience 3-D Modeling with Solidworks.
  • 5+ years’ experience on-site work and traveling.

  • SolidWorks 2019
  • SolidWorks Simulation
  • Solidworks Product Data Management (PDM)
  • AutoCAD
  • Microsoft Office Suite of Software.
