Description

For one or more students to fill part-time internship positions requiring network, software, and system engineering skills to support the company's well establish land mobile radio test equipment product line. Internships could potentially result in an invitation to consider mutually beneficial full-time employment during school breaks, or perhaps a position upon graduation.

The successful applicant can expect a variety of assignments that either directly or indirectly support the business in product development, manufacturing, and operations. Assignments will vary based on skill set the intern has, but can expect to consider assignments like:

 

  • Operating system development. Windows Embedded is a cut down version of a desktop operating environment that assures better performance and higher security than a desktop operating system (OS) provides. As features are added to the product, or as components change, the OS often requires modification to add missing elements needed to deploy new functionality or to improve some aspect of the product. Operating system development includes use of design tools supplied by the OS vendor. The tools are used to integrate OS vendor, third-party, components river development, but
  • Engineering Support. When product software or firmware changes, it released and packaged according to well-established documentation and procedures.
  • Prototyping and testing software/firmware and basic computer-powered equipment that support engineering or manufacturing processes.
  • Support resolution of manufacturing and production issues involving systems deployed by the engineering department.
  • Develop and maintaining design documentation associated with assigned tasks.
  • Periodically support co-workers via desktop support as needed and as experience allows (though the goal of the internship is primarily to advance engineering of the embedded product).
  • Freedom Communication Technologies is located in Synergy Park, Kilgore, Texas. It is on the northeast corner of Kilgore, and is a fairly short drive
  • Work schedule and total hours per week are flexible, but 3-4 hour time blocks may be required depending on the nature of the current task.

Responsibilities:

  • Gain hands-on experience solving problems a broad range of problem in an engineering firm that designs, builds, and sells embedded products.
  • Learn about practical issues that relate to the design, manufacture, and support of complex embedded systems.
  • Apply prior hardware, software, and networking experience as needed to support engineers and co-workers. Gain experience with hardware and software technologies used in embedded systems.
  • Work alongside engineers, manufacturing personnel, etc., to acquire information needed to complete assignments.
  • Communicate with peers as needed to augment understanding, avoid getting stuck, and to contribute ideas.
  • Contribute ideas constructed from observation and your unique skill set.
  • Be passionate about learning and acquiring new skills.
  • Independently research and propose solutions.
 
Position Requirements

Requirements:

  • Basic familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet tools.
  • Intermediate to advanced use of Windows desktop operating environments.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team in the design and development of solutions.
  • Software development experience (educational or otherwise).
  • Willingness and desire to learn in the face of challenges.
  • Ability to follow procedures and instructions well.
  • Programming in one or more scripting languages (i.e. BASH, vbscript, awk, perl, python, etc.)
  • Comfortable working in a command-line environment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
