Description

Reports to: Nutrition Programs Director

 

Our Passion for Produce (P4P) and Food for Children (FFC) programs aim to provide fresh produce to residents, train volunteers to be Nutrition Ambassadors, and empower them to educate their peers. The Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) maintains a portfolio of nutrition program sites where they ensure smooth food distributions and culturally relevant nutrition education is provided. They also work closely to coach and mentor current Nutrition Ambassadors to develop their leadership and professional capacity. The CEC also takes the lead on outreach strategies to recruit new volunteers and engages in partnerships with other organizations in order to advance collective agendas that benefit both organizations.

 

Program Site Portfolio: (50% of work)

  •  
  • Manage operations and logistics at designated sites, ensuring smooth distribution experience for participants
  • Conduct engaging nutrition education at designated P4P sites, collaborating with Nutrition Education Program Manager as needed for training and development
  • Build community and relationships with volunteers and participants connecting to common values
  • As appropriate, use popular education as a framework to engage with community and deliver nutrition education
  • Collaborate with team to train and develop volunteers. Offer specialization on community engagement (i.e. customer service, building a team, working towards common goals, troubleshooting common distribution issues) in terms of developing training materials and/or training delivery
  • Communicate any program site related issues with director and/or team to collaborate on solutions
  • As needed, collect data (demographics, participant or volunteer surveys) at sites within portfolio in order to contribute to shared knowledge
  • Redeems Rx cards from health partner patients
  • Collaborate with Program Director on attendance goals at designated sites; work collaboratively with the team to boost attendance or close sites that have under specified cut-point (25 people)

Community Engagement Specialization: (40% of work)

  • Work closely with volunteer Nutrition Ambassadors (NA) to determine what they want and need in order to thrive and prosper in their role at the food bank and in their lives. This can take place informally at sites in one-to-one conversations, more formally through specific convenings (i.e. potlucks, focus groups, cooking club sessions, etc.) and via interviews or surveys. Ideally a combination of all three approaches is best. As needed, provide coaching, mentoring and support in order to develop NA leadership capacity
  • Collaborate with team members to offer professional development opportunities that NAs have indicated they want and need
  • May supervise any volunteer student interns or AmeriCorps members who are focused on volunteer or community engagement. Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide feedback for leadership development
  • Develop, implement and evaluate any new pilot programs aimed at increasing community engagement via the Nutrition Program (i.e. Youth INC, etc.). Collaborate with team members to assist with operational and nutrition education components of new pilot programs
  • Take the lead on outreach strategies to recruit new volunteer NAs. This can include creating and posting flyers in key locations, tabling at events, giving presentations, as well as delegating the work to other staff and volunteers
  • Take the lead on door-to-door canvassing activities, in order to better understand community needs and perceptions, and better inform what the team can do to attract more participants. Recruit and train volunteer NAs to assist with the work
  • Participate in professional development coaching and/or trainings as needed on community engagement or other topics of interest in order to improve practices

External Partnerships: (10% of work)

  •  
  • Engage Youth INC organizational stakeholders regularly (i.e. PVCHT, Jovenes Sanos, Digital Nest, etc.) in order to learn and share promising practices
  • Collaborate with PVCHT on special events (i.e. Diabetes Health Fair, #LivePajaroValley, etc.) when they need extra support as a way to foster collective impact
  • Explore a collaboration with City of Watsonville’s Youth Center in order to integrate Youth INC pilot program into their programming, and cross promote one another’s programs
  • Attend and represent Nutrition Programs and SHFB in a professional manner at external meetings assigned by Director

Other:

  •  
  • Prepare correspondence, attendance tracking, reports, forms and schedules in a timely manner; proofread typed and other materials for accuracy, completeness, and correct language usage
  • Participate, as needed, in special SHFB food bank events to educate the community and promote the goals of the food bank and its nutrition program
  • Other duties as required
 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Training and Experience

  • Three years working with low-income residents with a government, nonprofit or faith based organization
  • Experience with community outreach and engagement
  • Experience working with adult learners and providing education
  • Experience with nutrition education and/or health and wellness
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Nutrition, Education, Community Development, Social Work, Public Health, or other related field; or two years of college course work or equivalent education and experience equal to two years of experience for one year of education/course work

 

Knowledge/Skills/Ability

  • Comfortable with public speaking, making presentations, and facilitating conversations and meetings.
  • Comfortable communicating respectfully with people from different racial, ethnic and cultural groups, and from different backgrounds and lifestyles
  • Experience community organizing or with community engagement
  • Experience in nutrition education or teaching with low-income populations
  • Experience working with diverse socio-economic groups
  • Comfortable with administering evaluation tools like written surveys or participant interviews
  • Basic personal computer operations, spreadsheet and word processing
  • Correct English and Spanish usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Methods of collecting, organizing and presenting data and information
  • Basic filing and record keeping methods and procedures

 

Physical Requirements

  • Able to safely lift or carry items weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Able to hear normal conversations and speak clearly in person and on the phone
  • Able to see and read documents
  • Able to walk up and down stairs
  • Requires some outdoor work, frequent standing and sitting throughout the day

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Bilingual English/Spanish required. Bicultural strongly preferred
  • Must be able to work evenings and some weekends in order to best reach the community
  • Must have access to a motor vehicle, as well as valid auto insurance coverage, for occasional driving on the job
  • Must have valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record, as documented by a current MVR (will be obtained by the Food Bank’s insurance carrier)
  • It is the responsibility of all SHFB personnel to participate in our Food Safety/Food Defense programs

 

Job Details: This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt position with a salary of $17.91- 20.06/ hour; depending on experience. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance; life, long-term disability, AD&D, and long-term care insurance; 403b retirement fund; and generous paid time off. The position is Monday through Friday, with varying weeknight and weekend meetings and/or events.
