Share Email Opening Title Building Inspector  Description Positin reports to the Chief Building Official. Performs on-site commercial and/or residential building inspections for mechanical, foundation, electrical, plumbing, gas, framing, and roof code compliance as well as for proper zoning. May perform inspections on substandard housing for compliance with minimum housing standards and make recommendations for required improvements. Answers telephone inquiries from builders and contractors and schedules inspections for each workday. Completes all paperwork associated with the inspection process, including a daily report of status of inspections.   Position Requirements Knowledge of relevant city codes and construction or trade codes. Must be certified within one year of employment on a minimum of two ICC certifications. Knowledge of construction techniques required. Knowledge of property maintenance code desired. Knowledge of geography of the city including subdivisions, and road and street names desired. Knowledge of building material desired. Skill in interpreting plans and technical specifications for compliance with applicable codes desired. Skill in reading and interpreting various codes, ordinances and legal documents desired. Skill in reading maps desired. Skill in operating computer, calculator, architect’s scale, tape measure and two-way radio. Skill in oral written combination in a tactful and considerate manner.   Physical/Environmental Requirements Mobility to work in typical office settings using standard office equipment is required. In addition, vision to read printed materials and computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
