Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. We provide academically rigorous, vibrant learning grounded in social justice and student centered pedagogy. Our entire community is committed to cultivating each student's unique talents and passions, providing myriad opportunities for students to discern and realize their individual intellectual, artistic, athletic, social, and spiritual potential. SHC is a San Francisco Archdiocesan High School that is cosponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, District of San Francisco New Orleans and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Position Summary

The Director of Athletics is responsible for the leadership and oversight of Sacred Heart Cathedral’s (SHC) interscholastic athletic program and all related activities. She/he must be able to develop a strategic vision, hire and develop outstanding coaches, and maintain a clear connection between the goals of the athletic department and the school’s Integral Student Outcomes (ISOs). The director builds positive relationships between athletic department members and all other members of the Sacred Heart Cathedral community. She/he also aligns SHC’s athletic program with the necessary governing bodies (NFHS, CIF, CCS, and WCAL), to ensure appropriate requirements are met. As an influential leader within the community, the director is committed to SHC’s Lasallian Vincentian Catholic mission and cultivates a culture of athletic excellence, service-oriented leadership, and positive sportsmanship. She/he models and promotes collaborative leadership as one of two full-time Athletic Directors.  Director of Athletics position reports to Principal and Assistant Principal for Student Life. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the chief administrative officer of the Athletic Department; direct/complete tasks such as team schedules, calendars, planning and execution of tournaments, staffing officials, creating contracts, maintaining records, coordinating awards, procuring uniforms and equipment, and special events relating to Athletics.

  • Establish and implement a clear vision for the Athletic program with care for the mission of the department and Sacred Heart Cathedral’s tradition, community, and competitive success.

  • Formulate and administer the Athletic Department budget.

  • Assume responsibility for the purchase, maintenance and inventory of athletic equipment and facilities. Maintain a consistent uniform purchase rotation.

  • Maintain permanent records including wins, losses, accomplishments and letter winners of all athletic teams including all interscholastic contests and sport-specific performance records.

  • Keep Athletic Handbooks current and ensure that coaches, parents, student-athletes abide by the rules of the handbooks.

  • Serve as a site director/representative during home games and post-season contests or arrange for proper supervision.

    • Coordinate medical coverage at home contests (EMTs, trainer).

  • Coordinate the reservation and use of off-site facilities.

  • Meet regularly with the Asst. Principal for the purpose of communication and coordination of the athletic program.

Manage Athletic Department Personnel

  • Hire head coaches with administrative approval; ensure that all coaches are cleared through the Human Resources Department and hold current required certifications; and oversee professional growth program for coaches.

  • Manage Athletic Department staff and coaches and maintain systems of assessment of staff and coach efficacy and growth.

    • Provide the orientation of “off-campus coaches” as to the philosophy of the school and the policies of the athletic program.

    • Confer regularly with coaches and publish guidelines for policies and procedures consistent with school policies in the Coaches’ Handbook and the Parent/Student Athlete Handbook annually.

    • Conduct pre-season and end-of-season meetings with all coaches to review and discuss the season, team, coach and student evaluations and determine areas of improvement and coaching goals.

    • Conduct annual performance evaluations of Athletic Department staff.

  • Assist coaches with team awards banquets.

  • Conduct regular athletic department meetings for head coaches.

  • Review and approve semi-monthly payroll.

  • Travel to league meetings, away games, tournaments and contests as required.

  • Supervise the transportation scheduling for all athletic department needs.

    • Assist in the planning and execution of trips pertaining to athletic activities. Schedule and arrange lodging and meals as needed for away contests.

  • Schedule/coordinate personnel for athletic events (all ticket sellers, cashiers, ticket takers, clock operators, etc.).

  • Serve as a coach as needed.

Coordinate Campus Operations

  • Assist the Director of Campus Operations with coordination of repair and maintenance activities of all Sacred Heart Cathedral athletic facilities.

    • Arrange for setup and cleanup supervision for all home contests.

  • Coordinate the facility schedules with the school calendar to accommodate and resolve potential conflicts (finding amenable solutions to all user groups).

Work with Student Athletes

  • Oversee the athletic program departmental and team awards and work with Student Activities department to plan assemblies involving athletics.

  • Guide and help students with the college requirement process and help identify potential colleges and or universities that match the students’ academic and athletic abilities.

  • Maintain accurate records and enforce eligibility rules for student participation in interscholastic athletics with regard to medical clearance and insurance forms, academic eligibility (at the end of each grading period) and compliance with school code of conduct.

  • Work with transfer students and their parents on CCS paperwork.

Promote Outside Relationships

  • Serve as the face of Sacred Heart Cathedral Athletics to the community by promoting spirit and enthusiasm for the Athletic program with faculty, parents, coaches, athletes, and the wider community.

 
Position Requirements
  • Promote and market the Athletic program and maintain the visibility of Sacred Heart Cathedral Athletics to the wider community through Athletic Department initiatives and coordination with the Sacred Heart Cathedral Office of Communications and Marketing.

    • Manage the athletic information available on the SHC website.

    • Maintain good relationships with other schools' athletic departments.

    • Promote SHC Athletics and teams through social media communications and maintain relationships with local media outlets in the Bay Area.

    • Assists Summer School Coordinator with promotional materials, organization and supervision of athletic summer camps.

    • Market SHC to feeder school students, parents, and coaches.

  • Maintain a positive relationship with faculty, parents, coaches, and student-athletes and ensure all constituents are appropriately supported according to the Athletic Department and Sacred Heart Cathedral policies.

    • Direct the seasonal Parent’s meetings.

    • Mediate and respond to parent concerns related to the athletic program.

  • Promote and model positive sportsmanship and fan behavior at contests by promoting an atmosphere of cooperation, collaboration and teamwork.

Interface with Governing Bodies

  • Assume the school administrative responsibilities to the WCAL, CCS and the CIF, be knowledgeable about their policies, ensure compliance with the rules and regulations, and seek active involvement in organizational activities.

  • Assumes responsibility for adherence to league, section, state, and school requirements of eligibility for participation. Assures the prompt submission of reports, forms, and fees due to the C.I.F., C.C.S., and WCAL.

  • Facilitates the contractual relationship between the school and officials associations.

    • Schedule, supervise and compensate all contest officials and game management.

  • Work with the WCAL, CCS, City of San Francisco and other sites for use and adequate security at athletic contests.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Demonstrated leadership and facilitative skills

  • Demonstrated professionalism in dealing with coaches, parents and student-athletes

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development for high school age student-athletes

  • Excellent verbal and written skills, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Working knowledge of computers, software programs, scheduling software, and social media

  • Ability to work non-traditional workdays (nights, weekends, holidays)

  • Ability to travel to meetings, games, tournaments and contests

  • Good role model and demonstrated strong ethical professionalism

  • A commitment to the educational philosophy of Sacred Heart Cathedral

  • A willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the Sacred Heart Cathedral community

Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization (Master’s degree preferred)

  • Experience working in athletic leadership, coaching and interscholastic athletics (Catholic school experience preferred)

  • Experience with staff and budget management

Certifications and/or Licensure Required:

  • Current first aid, CPR and AED certification

  • Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA)

  • Valid CA Driver’s License
