Corrections Officer-Career Ladder (Open Continuous) 

Description

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, performs correction officer duties and duties associated in the development of supervisory skills and techniques in the security, custody and control of inmates in correctional facility setting.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

 
Position Requirements

Career Ladder I:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and an interest in working in a public safety field.
  • Must successfully pass a background and physical examination.
  • Must demonstrate seventy percent proficiency in Reading, Writing, and Math.

Career Ladder II:

• Certified as a Corrections Officer by the BIA and /or State Corrections Training Academy and one-year work experience in a Correctional Facility, Military, or Law Enforcement field.
• Must have successfully completed the Tohono O'odham Nation's five-week Field Training Officer Program.
• Must possess certifications in CPR and First Aid.

Full Level:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and four years’ work experience in a Correctional Facility, Military, or Law Enforcement field.
  • Must be certified as a Corrections Officer by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) or State Corrections Training Academy;
  • Must have successfully completed the Tohono O’odham Nation’s five-week Field Training Officer Program.
  • Must possess certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.


The two step-career progression for the Corrections Officer position is provided to allow training of new employees with less than minimum level of experience and education to be hired at full level.

The employee will be placed on the Career Ladder at a level consistent with present qualifications until full level has been obtained. As a condition of continued employment, the employee must meet the stipulated timeframe and career ladder requirements associated with each step. Upon recommendation for career ladder advancement the following documents/criteria must be submitted to the Human Resources Executive Director for evaluation:

• Must have a current satisfactory performance evaluation on file with the Human Resources Office.
• Failure to maintain and meet the specified time frame and career ladder requirements may be cause for termination.

The Nation is the second largest reservations in Arizona in both population and geographical size, with a land base of 2.8 million acres and 4,460 square miles, approximately the size of the State of Connecticut. Its four non-contiguous segments total more than 2.8 million acres at an elevation of 2,674 feet.
