Police Officer (Career Ladder)-Open Continuous 

Description

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, ensures safety, security and the preservation of life and property by maintaining law and order and enforcing laws and ordinances.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

Career Ladder I:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and an interest in law enforcement.
  • Must submit assessment results with a 70% or higher from an accredited community college in Reading, Writing, and Math.
  • Must complete the seventeen week Police Officer Academy within one year of hire.
  • Must submit AZ POST Application (Fillable application to download is available in Full Job Description area)
  1. Must be at least twenty years of age at the time of application submission, and at least twenty-one years of age at the time of graduation from AZ 0POST Certified Police Academy.
  2. Note: Prior to determining suitability for hire the applicant must pass; an Arizona POST and BIA criminal background and fingerprint check; physical agility test; medical examination; and psychological examination. All Police Officers must pass a BIA criminal background and fingerprint check every three years.

Career Ladder II:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and one year of work experience as a certified Police Officer.
  • Must possess a Certificate of Completion from the Police Academy.
  • Must be sworn in as a Tohono O’odham Nation Police Officer by a Tribal Judge, upon completion of the Police Academy.
  • Must complete the Tohono O’odham Nation’s sixteen week Field Training Officer (FTO) program, within eighteen months of hire.
  • Must have completed a training course on Tracking, within eighteen months of hire.
  • Must possess the Incident Command System (ICS) training courses 100.LEB: Introduction to the Incident Command System for Law Enforcement and 700.a, Introduction to the National Incident Management (NIMS), within eighteen months of hire. Note, course number subject to change.
  • Must submit AZ POST Application (Fillable application to download is available in Full Job Description area)
  1. Must be at least twenty years of age at the time of application submission, and at least twenty-one years of age at the time of graduation from AZ 0POST Certified Police Academy.
  2. Full Level Career Ladder:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and two years of work experience as a certified Police Officer.
  • Must possess an Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification.
  • Must possess a Certificate of Completion of the Tohono O’odham Nation’s (TON) sixteen week Field Training Officer (FTO) program, within one year of hire.
  • Must possess Search and Rescue Training Certification.
  • Must possess Tracking Certification.
  • Must possess the Incident Command System (ICS) training courses 100. LEB: Introduction to the Incident Command System for Law Enforcement and 700. A. Introduction to the National Incident Management (NIMS). Note, course number subject to change.
  • Must be twenty years of age at the time of application submission, and twenty-one years of age at the time of graduation from an AZ POST Certified Police Academy.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Prior to determining suitability for hire the applicant must pass an Az POST and FBI criminal background and fingerprint check, physical agility test, and a medical and psychological examination. All Police Officers must pass a FBI criminal background and fingerprint check every five years.
  • Upon recommendation for hire a criminal background and fingerprint check is required to determine suitability for hire.
  • Must submit a 39-month driving record with the employment application.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and meet the Tohono O’odham Nation tribal employer’s insurance requirements to receive a driver’s permit.

Based on the department’s needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O’odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

The Nation is the second largest reservations in Arizona in both population and geographical size, with a land base of 2.8 million acres and 4,460 square miles, approximately the size of the State of Connecticut. Its four non-contiguous segments total more than 2.8 million acres at an elevation of 2,674 feet.
