Description

SUMMARY
The Equipment Operator II-211 Driver will operate one or more different types of moderately heavy motor equipment, and will receive and relay complaints, messages and orders using telephones and a two-way radio.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.
• Receive telephone calls, written request, and radio messages.
• Relays all information received using a transmitter or an intercom system.
• Transmit directives to supervisors or foremen who are in the area, or to the proper employee who holds responsibility.
• Maintain radio contact until all matters are clarified.
• Maintain a written journal of all calls received and transmitted.
• Occasionally transmit messages in writing.
• Place and replace all traffic control devices where traffic signals are malfunctioning, or Public Street or utility work is taking place.
• Post 'No Parking', and removes postings where events are scheduled.
• Apply absorbents when needed and clean up debris after accidents.
• Apply anti-icing materials in emergency situations to bridge decks, and other areas during freezing conditions.
• Basic understanding of City jurisdiction and the ability to read maps when unfamiliar with area.
• Remove dead animals from public right away as directed.
• Maintain the opening/closing of various City owned properties.
• Respond to various emergency calls from South Bend Police and/or Fire and Street Department Dispatchers.
• Check and clean all equipment used.
• Maintain daily reports.

Position Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
• High School diploma or equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED
• Ability to communicate clearly; both orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of basic safety practices and traffic rules and regulations.
• Ability to stay alert and quickly dispatch emergency messages.
• Ability to comprehend messages that are coded, and delivered quickly.
• Ability to take complaints from citizens in a tactful manner.
• Ability to determine direction and read maps to navigate throughout the city.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
• Valid Driver’s License required.
• Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s permit and License (with Air Brake, Combination Vehicle, Tanker endorsements) within 60 days of hire, or Certification from a Truck Driving Institute with a permit.

EQUIPMENT
Two-way radio, City issued cell phone, intercom system, shovels, rakes, brooms, or any other hand tools necessary to complete job duties.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk and use hands to fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 90 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job the employee may be exposed adverse weather conditions and/or environment. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to loud, especially when operating power equipment.
