Senior Moving Image Cataloger 

Description

Reporting to the Head Cataloger, the Senior Moving Image Cataloger designs/implements advanced cataloging projects that require navigating complex data structure and workflows with an in-depth knowledge of professional standards and internal guidelines and practices. In close collaboration with the Head Cataloger, you will document procedures and standards. Key responsibility is overseeing the cataloging of holdings from a collections perspective with a focus on documenting provenance.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform descriptive cataloging, subject indexing, and authority control using a relational database.
  • Conduct research to identify content.
  • Design projects to clean up legacy data.
  • Create data reports for archive staff.
  • Oversee collection-level cataloging: monitor acquisition records; catalog items within a collection; document provenance and accessioning information regarding selection criteria, etc.
  • Be a resource to archivists, preservationists, curators, and interns processing collections.
  • Develop cataloging policies and procedures; create documentation including training manuals. Work cross-departmentally with staff in Digital Management Services, Margaret Herrick Library, and Academy Museum. Participate in data governance meetings to define Academy-wide cataloging procedures.
  • Develop and maintain skills by participating in continuing education and professional activities such as conferences, workshops and committee work.
 
Position Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Film or Library Studies.
  • Extensive experience cataloging moving image material in all formats in a library or archive setting.
  • Extensive experience working with relational databases and familiarity with new technologies.
  • Familiarity with Adlib Archive/Library/Museum collections management software is a plus.
  • Familiarity with controlled vocabularies such as Library of Congress Subject Headings, Thesaurus for Graphic Materials, and Getty Art & Architect Thesaurus.
  • Knowledge of cinema history and current archival and library cataloging practices and standards.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other Academy staff, visitors, and colleagues at other institutions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skill with attention to detail.
