The Exhibition Lighting Technician provides general lighting design approach for the gallery spaces, oversees the safe handling and movement of lighting equipment for gallery installations, maintenance of exhibition lighting, inventory, and de-installation of exhibitions. You will report to the Director of Exhibition Design and work with the Production and Manager of Fabrication. You Will:

  • Coordinate technicians in installing or maintaining systems
  • Work on focusing lights for installation
  • Control systems for lighting
  • Install, deinstall, program, maintain and troubleshoot equipment
  • Build and test prototypes or proofs-of-concept
  • Research equipment, and materials for implementation
  • Communicate with vendors and order equipment and materials
  • Create and maintain equipment lists and budgets for projects
  • Inventory and organize storage spaces for lighting equipment
  • Communicate with curators, designers, project managers, exhibit technicians, and contractors
  • Follow established Museum protocols, particularly when working with or around Museum collections
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • 3+ years of experience focusing light fixtures; demonstrate knowledge of lighting materials, methods, practices and safety precautions
  • Installation experience
  • Proficiency with museum and theatrical lighting equipment such as track lighting systems, PAR cans, ellipsoidal, filters, gobos, lenses, or dimming systems
  • Basic electronic and electrical skills (e.g., soldering, wiring, testing cables and electronic components)
  • Proficiency with basic Microsoft software
  • Competency in reading and interpreting blueprints, electrical drawings, and schematics
  • Experience working with: Scissor lift, boom lift, electrical, carpentry tools and equipment, metal shop toold and paint shop equipment
  • Experience troubleshooting complex systems
  • Availability on some nights and weekends
