Description

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, performs water safety services for swimming pool patrons, teaches swimming classes, and performs pool maintenance and other facility maintenance activities in adjoining areas.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

 

 
Position Requirements
  • (Career Ladder I): Must have an interest in lifeguarding in a public pool setting and have the ability to learn and exercise water safety. See position description for a full description of expected duties and responsibilities.
  • (Career Ladder I & II): Skill Test: Must swim two laps. (You will be notified of the date and time. This is a Pass/Fail Skill Test.)
  • (Career Ladder I & II): Applicants must be at least 16 years of age or older on or before date of appointment. (Parental Permission Slip required.- Form available at Human Resources Office.)*
  • (Career Ladder II): Must have one season of lifeguarding experience in a public pool setting; and ability to learn and exercise water safety.
  • (Full Level): High School Diploma or General Education Diploma
  • Full Level): Two years' work experience as a lifeguard and swimming instructor in a public pool enviornment, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

After Hire:

  • (Career Ladder I and II) Must obtain lifeguarding certification within thirty days of hire.
  • (Career Ladder I and II) Must have a current CPR/FA and AED (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation) certifications within thirty days of hire.
  • (Full Level) Must complete an approved lifeguard training program that includes CPR and AED (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation) certifications for the professional rescuer within six months of hire.
  • (Full Level) Must complete an approved water safety instructor program within six months of hire.
