Director of Grants & Development  

About the Organization The Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce is the region's premier business membership organization. In addition to providing traditional services for its members, the Flint & Genesee Chamber also serves as the lead economic development agency for Genesee County, operates the area's convention and visitors bureau, and delivers education and training programs to meet the needs of the region's growing workforce. Serving the business community for over 100 years.  

The Director of Grants and Development is responsible for strategic development, implementation and management of the organization's grants. The Director is responsible for planning, tracking and reporting on all fund development activity, setting direction and determining strategy for sustainability. This position supervises staff that develops and writes grant proposals to federal, state, corporate, and foundation sources.

The Director also manages staff that collects, analyzes, and supplies data in support of the organization's fundraising, marketing, benchmarking, and other strategic functions.


Grant & Fund Development

  1. Identify, research, and analyze potential funding sources in support of strategic initiatives of the Chamber.
  2. Work in cooperation with the Chamber Leadership Team to develop program concepts appropriate for external funding including conducting meetings for that purpose and preparing written concept papers for dissemination.
  3. Work with appropriate project managers and grants department staff to guide the creation of grant proposals and reports for submission to current and potential funding sources.
  4. Coordinate with the Finance Department to ensure all budgets are developed appropriately, timely and thorough use of grant funds, adhering to financial procedures and guidelines of the Chamber.
  5. Cultivate relationships with foundations and potential donors.

Grant Activity Management

  1. Supervise maintenance of files on all grant submissions that have been made on behalf of the Chamber.
  2. Develop in coordination with the Group Vice Presidents benchmarks to be reported in the Chamber performance matrix.
  3. Report and monitor all grant activity including grants in development, submitted, funded, de-obligated or withdrawn to the Group Vice Presidents and the Vice President of Finance.
  4. Work with appropriate project managers to ensure that outcomes of grant funded initiatives, and expectations of funders are understood and complied with after grants have been funded.
  5. Supervise writing of required grant narrative reports with information provided by appropriate project managers and contained in GrantHub and other existing databases.
  6. Work with Vice President of Finance and the appropriate project managers to develop the required grant financial reports.


  1. Collect and analyze current and historical data in support of program and funding solicitation functions.
  2. Conduct statistical analysis of data for identification of future program needs and opportunities.
  3. Analyze data related to strategic initiatives for basis of developing grant proposals, reports, and presentation.
  4. Using GrantHub, EMSI and other existing databases, generate data tables and charts for reports to be used by the Chamber for the purpose of strategic planning.
Position Requirements
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy, Statistical Analysis, Business Administration or another related field.
  2. Minimum of three years of direct experience in grant development and data analysis.
  3. Demonstrated track record in securing grant funds.
  4. Experience with Microsoft Office.
  5. Motivated, self-directed, self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills.
  6. Strong communication skills including verbal and written experience.
  7. Strong organizational and quantitative skills, as well as a broad understanding of the nonprofit environment.
  8. Ability to adhere to priorities, meet multiple deadlines and effectively present and explain complex information.
