About the Organization The Museum of Life and Science is one of North Carolina's top family destinations, located less than five miles from downtown Durham. Situated on 84-acres, our interactive science park includes a two-story science center, one of the largest butterfly conservatories on the East Coast and beautifully landscaped outdoor exhibits which are safe havens for rescued black bears, lemurs, and endangered red wolves. Other popular attractions include over 60 species of live animals, Dinosaur Trail, Ellerbe Creek Railway, and Hideaway Woods. Our mission is to create a place of lifelong learning where people, from young child to senior citizen, embrace science as a way of knowing about themselves, their community, and their world.

Description

Summer can't get here fast enough! Encounter animals. Concoct experiments. Build robots. No matter what you love, every day of summer will be packed full of adventure, excitement, and opportunities to explore science and know wonder. Our camps embrace hands-on learning, where campers explore science and embrace it as a way of knowing.

The Museum of Life and Science (MLS) offers one-week, full-day, hands-on science camps for children age 4 through grade 8 that run June 10- August 23, 2019 at its campus on Murray Avenue in Durham. The MLS also offers one-week, full-day camps for children age 4 through grade 5 at the Montessori Community School, located in the Chapel Hill area.

Responsibilities:

  • Works together with an Educator in providing hands-on, informal science learning activities.
  • Helps to prepare and present pre-developed programs of science activities to groups of up to 18 children.
  • Act as point of contact for parents and educator
  • Maintain the well-being and safety of campers while in their care
  • Facilitate morning and afternoon extended care programs
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Represent the museum in a professional manner during interactions and while out on the Museum floor
  • Additional duties as assigned
 
Position Requirements

Key Qualifications:

  • Assistants must have a high school degree, or previous work experience
  • Candidate must be able to spend the day actively engaging the campers following pre-written outlines.
  • Experience working with children
  • Interest in informal science discovery
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Ability to communicate an enthusiasm for science to children
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure with a positive attitude and creative problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to be on their feet for up to 6 hours at a time, walk distances of up to one mile over varying terrains, and be able to lift 25 pounds
  • Ability to work outside in heat and humidity; some camps occur in an outdoor classroom and many camps spend time outdoors

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bi-lingual Proficiency (Spanish-English, Chinese-English, Korean-English, etc.)
  • Demonstrated interest and background in natural sciences and/or technology

For applicants interested in technology-based camps:

  • Programming in Java script
  • Game Modding
  • Robotics building and programming including LEGO Robotics platforms
  • Digital video editing – 2D and 3D
  • Experience operating a 3D printer and/or laser cutter

Important Note… Camp Assistants do not have to work the entire summer schedule and will be asked to detail their summer availability during the interview process. Preference will be given to those able to work more weeks. First time Assistants at the Museum site are expected to be available the week of July 1-July 5 (Camp is held on July 4th).

Pay Range $10.71/hour (non-negotiable)
