Description

Summer can't get here fast enough! Encounter animals. Concoct experiments. Build robots. No matter what you love, every day of summer will be packed full of adventure, excitement, and opportunities to explore science and know wonder. Our camps embrace hands-on learning, where campers explore science and embrace it as a way of knowing.

The Museum of Life and Science (MLS) offers one-week, full-day, hands-on science camps for children age 4 through grade 8 that run June 10- August 23, 2019 at its campus on Murray Avenue in Durham. The MLS also offers one-week, full-day camps for children age 4 through grade 5 at the Montessori Day School in Chapel Hill.

The Assistant Site Director works closely with the full-time MLS staff and summer staff (camp educators, assistants, and volunteers) on all day-to-day aspects of camp. Onsite camp consists of approximately 200 campers per week, 24 paid camp staff, and 13 teen volunteers. Offsite camp consists of approximately 100 campers, 16 paid camp staff, and 8 teen volunteers. The Museum Assistant Site Director is a 13-week position. The Chapel Hill Assistant Site Director is a 7-week position with the option of working as an educator at the Museum during the other weeks of camp. This position must be available for the duration of the Summer Camp Season.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of summer camp, which may include but are not limited to:
  • Act as point of contact between parents, camp staff, and full-time Museum staff
    • Communicating with Camp Program Manager about daily operations
    • Providing parents with accurate information about the Museum, answering parent questions, changing reservations as needed
    • Work closely with Camp Educators, Assistants, and full-time Museum staff to prepare and present pre-developed science programs
    • Coordinate logistics with other Museum staff and departments
    • Alerting appropriate Museum departments when problems arise
  • Maintain general safety and well-being for all campers enrolled in camp for the week
  • Monitoring classroom, first aid, and general supplies and replenishment throughout the summer
  • Monitor camp spaces for general upkeep
  • Support camp staff when necessary, including
    • Daily check-ins throughout the week
    • Behavioral support and mediation
    • Facilitating programs
    • Coaching of classroom and group management styles
    • Providing additional basic first-aid when needed
  • Assist in managing teen volunteers while on site
  • Update camp social media communications with daily pictures and insights to camp activities
  • Act as a staff substitute as needed
  • Facilitate afternoon curbside pickup
  • Additional duties as assigned
 
Position Requirements

Key Qualifications:

  • College degree or 2+ years equivalent experience in relevant field
  • Previous experience in a formal or informal education setting
  • Interest in informal science discovery
  • Experience working with children of varying ages
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization
  • Skilled at multi-tasking and planning/logistics
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure with a positive attitude and creative problem-solving skills
  • The ability to join and learn from the Museum’s team of professional science educators
  • Guest relations or customer service experience
  • Supervisory experience of children, teens, and adults

Physically able to be on their feet for up to 8 hours at a time, walk distances of up to one mile over varying terrains, be able to lift 25 pounds, and work outside in heat and humidity.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bi-lingual proficiency
  • Experience in volunteer management
  • Willingness to work with live animals and insects
  • Experience using and posting to social media
  • Experience working with youth with disabilities

  • Experience operating a 3D printer and/or laser cutter
 
Shift Days  
Pay Range $12.75/hour (non-negotiable)
